The Experience

South Stainley is a small village, with pub, church and this fine vicarage, six miles from Ripon, ten from Harrogate. Come for the races, the Dales… Sleep peacefully in a charming room up under the eaves. Julia has decorated her guest room unfussily, tucked in a sofa and added an antique wardrobe and blanket chest. The bathroom’s really smart and big, with separate shower and bath. Linger over your Aga breakfast – full English, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon – in the lofty new garden room with leafy views, pastel colours, original art. You’re welcome to use the swimming pool and tennis court, and you can walk to the pub for dinner.

Great location for trips to Harrogate, York, Ripon and the Dales. Exquisite two-night stay - we were very well looked after!

James, London

A wonderful house set in tranquil surroundings hosted by Julia and Bill. The room was spacious and spotless, very well furnished with the most comfortable bed I have slept on for a very long time, Breakfast is a joy and sets you up for a days sightseeing in the nearby towns. It is a calming environment with the only noise coming from the pheasants, I have no qualms recommending the Old Vicarage to fellow travellers and will be returning in the New Year. Thank you Julia and Bill

John, Lichfield

Lovely place at the end of a very quiet lane. Room was clean, comfortable and very spacious. Julia was an excellent host and the breakfasts were just perfect.

Steve, Llangollen

I stopped over in Yorkshire on the way down from Edinburgh and could not have picked a more perfect place. I can only add to the other reviews here, a beautiful setting, very friendly reception and a huge, luxurious room and bathroom. The breakfast overlooking the garden and fields was superb. I felt like royalty ! I would certainly stay here again and cannot recommend it highly enough.

Beyers, Edinburgh

We had a wonderful and relaxing time staying at The Old Vicarage . The room was large and spacious and the bathroom beautiful . Breakfast was cooked to perfection and adapted to our requirements . Julia was a great host and made us feel very welcome in their family home . I would highly recommend a stay here and many thanks for arranging such beautiful weather !

Amelia, Farnham

We had a wonderful stay at the Old Vicarage last weekend. Beautiful setting, house and room (which was huge, with a very comfy bed and lovely spacious bathroom) and wonderfully hospitable hosts. Our breakfast was delicious and plentiful and we highly recommend a stay. It's a great spot from which to explore Yorkshire too

Becca, Kent

An enjoyable weekend visiting Harrogate and Knaresborough, rounded off perfectly at The Old Vicarage. Welcoming and engaging hosts happy to suggest places to visit in the area. A very comfortable room with views out across the yorkshire countryside, a spacious and well furnished bathroom, and a very good breakfast each morning. There is a pub serving food only 5mins walk from the house, which saves having to go any great distance in the evening. Highly recommended B&B.

Andrew, Saffron walden

We spent some lovely days in this area and were welcomed very warmly in Julia's house. The location is very peaceful and overlooks the countryside. Our room was very comfortable and cosy. Breakfast was delicious, we even had figs from her own figtree, that produced figs for the first year ! Nearby, in walking distance is The Inn that has since short new owners. We had there a very good dinner and the service was very friendly.

Rosa-mari, Hoboken

Comfortable, quiet room with lovely bathroom in a nice Old Vicarage next to the church. A beautiful part of Yorkshire. Welcoming hosts and a good breakfast. Would recommend to anyone staying in the Harrogate area.

Min, Southampton

Outstanding B&B in a lovely house ideally placed for local attractions, or to break your journey to the North or to the South. Very spacious bedroom and bathroom. Comfortable, friendly, and relaxed, it soothed us after difficult Friday traffic. And with the significant advantage of a fine gastro-pub 5 mins walk down a country lane. A really good find.

Local points of interest from Julia Roe

  • A very warm welcome awaits you at The Old Vicarage, nestled at the heart of a pretty little village located just six miles from the cathedral town of Ripon, ten miles from the spa town of Harrogate with its fabulous shopping and glorious gardens.
  • Situated next to the village church and a stone’s throw from the local pub, The Old Vicarage is a beautiful 19th-century family home modernised to a very high standard and surrounded by mature gardens, a tennis court and outdoor heated swimming pool.
  • Walking in North Yorkshire is a must; whether you walk from the house and join the Ripon Rowel or drive to the North York Moors, explore The Dales or clamber over Brimham Rocks. There are many local walks for all abilities on our doorstep.
  • Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden are the largest monastic ruins in the country. Wander around the gardens, learn about the monastic life, then take in a light lunch or a cream tea. Stop off at the magnificent Ripon Cathedral on the way back.
  • Ripley Castle is a Grade I listed 14th-century country house only 5 minutes away with a beautiful village offering more than just world famous ice cream! Or visit Newby Hall built in 1690s by Sir Christopher Wren surrounded by beautiful gardens.
  • With both Leeds and York only a short distance away a visit to these 2 very different cities is easily accessible from The Old Vicarage. These cities offer history, shopping, dining, museums, Roman ruins and much more.
