The Experience

It feels wonderfully remote on this hillside – 900 feet high, so there’s weather but the views are fabulous. Great walking territory, including from the door, and wildlife thrives – spot curlews, owls, roe deer, redwings, dippers and mistle thrushes.

Sit by the open fire in winter, retire to a comfy brass bed topped with antique linen. Judith loves cooking, so you’ll have homemade bread, marmalade and granola, coddled eggs, full cooked with all the local trimmings. Dinners too, perhaps lamb shanks with potato cakes and spinach – just the thing for walkers who’ve trekked the Calderdale or Pennine Way.

The garden has masses of roses, a hammock to snooze in… Those long views over hill and moor promote stillness and peace – booking one of Judith’s Reiki therapies will complete your break from the bustle.

Reviews

The handsome old stone, mullion-windowed building has huge kerb appeal and the interior doesn’t disappoint. The décor is deeply traditional, with family photos on the walls and window ledges, along with fresh flowers and magazines. Lovers of antiques will appreciate the tasteful furniture accumulated over a lifetime. Long views from most rooms over hill and moor promote a sense of stillness, and although the house is on a lane, it’s traffic-light. A range of therapies along with the ‘no TV’ policy and restricted broadband makes Thurst House Farm a proper retreat from modern life

What a wonderful, relaxing and comfortable stay in the holiday cottage. Having stayed in the house with a lovely B & B experience last year Judith showed us the holiday cottage and we thought we must try it out. We brought our dog which was great and all the comforts of home were provided with a lovely view of the rolling hills. Great walks right on the doorstep or with a little drive away. Also we were offered an opt in for breakfast in the house if we wanted a more comfortable stay.

Super stay, lovely location, great hosts. Kedgeree to die for!

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is in the middle of the countryside surrounded by farming communities. It's close to the Calderdale Way and the Pennine Way. There are two pubs within walking distance. The nearest shops are in Ripponden (a five-minute drive). Halifax (‘The Shoreditch of the North’) is a 20-minute drive: The Piece Hall, Square Chapel and Minster - great landmarks and venues with lots happening; independent shops, bars, restaurants, live music, art, theatre and film.

Local points of interest from David & Judith Marriott

  • The Keighley & Worth Valley Steam Railway.
  • In Halifax - the Piece Hall is a listed 18th century listed quadrangle where local spinners took their cloth to be sold piece by piece. Halifax is also home to Eureka, children's hands-on museum.
  • The Imperial War Museum, Manchester.
  • The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Bretton nr Wakefield (off junction 38 on M1) - see exhibits by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, etc. Also visit the Hepworth Wakefield gallery.

Introducing

David & Judith Marriott

The Marriotts have been doing B&B for decades and Thurst House Farm is a relaxed, friendly home. Cooking is Judith's passion, being a trained chef, and she'll create delicious meals for you. She's also a Reiki practitioner and can provide treatments. David was a bedding manufacturer so all the beds are handmade and top notch.
