The Experience

A listed Adam Georgian townhouse – elegance epitomised. Lofty well-proportioned rooms with polished floors and cornices and fireplaces intact are delightfully dotted with sophisticated, quirky objets: bead-and-embroidery lampshades and chandeliers, bone china, a small mirrored Indian ceramic child’s dress – and your urbane host Richard’s accomplished paintings. Bedrooms, one painted duck egg blue, one green with floral wallpaper, are beautiful, with lots of lace and fine linen; the claw-foot roll top in the shared bathroom cuts a dash. Breakfast is unbeatable… then it’s off to explore the North Yorkshire Moors. Superb.

What a beautiful house and a very welcoming host, Richard. We had a very pleasurable stay in lovely surroundings. Thank you for a great breakfast and good tips on where to go in Whitby and its surrounds. Highly recommended!

Lynette, Ilkley

We had a very relaxing short break in Whitby. Richard and Jane are very brilliant hosts. Great conversation and breakfasts to set you up for a days exploring. Union place is well situated for a stroll into town and after a day out their garden, a relaxing spot. Hettie, the lurcher is a delight and was very welcoming to our Irish terrier, Fergal. We hope to go back!

A superb B&B with a lovely garden. Very close (on foot) to the centre of Whitby. Jane and Richard are so welcoming, we chatted so much with them, including about Richard's watercolours. The breakfast's prepared by Richard were delicious! And the advice on visits were great. We'll keep magnificent memories of their hospitality.

We really enjoyed staying at Union Place, the house was beautifully decorated, with an artists eye - lots of interesting objects and paintings. Our the room was very spacious and relaxing. The breakfast was great and the location perfect for wandering around the old town. Richard as well as cooking and serving gave us some good tips on what to see and do.

Nina, London

We had a lovely welcome from Richard and his wife and so much enjoyed staying in their beautiful and unusual house. They gave us all sorts of useful information about the town and also about the restoration of the house. We would certainly go back.

Just had a very relaxing and comfortable stay at Union Place. Richard and Jane were very welcoming and made you feel really at home. The house was very special and the decor and furnishings were exquisite. Loved the huge bathroom & the bath, was great to wallow in ! The breakfasts were excellent, setting us up for the day. Many thanks to Richard & Jane for letting us share their lovely home. Loved Whitby Old Town , Costa Nostras Italian & the micro/gin bars. Joanne and Gerard Lower Stondon.

Joanne, Lower stondon

A fascinating house, with just as fascinating hosts - you'll be sure to have great conversations around the breakfast table here. Being so close to Whitby is great - ditch the car and head to the beach or into town for a good selection of eateries. Lots of yummy breakfast options and Richard and Jane are more than happy to cater for all dietary requirements.

Lovely house with large bedrooms. Beautiful garden. We only stayed one night travelling south from Newcastle. Jane and Richard were excellent hosts and Richard provided us with a delicious breakfast. Whitby was delightful and we would have no hesitation in staying here again when we are visiting Whitby.

In August we stayed two nights with friends, Richard a wonderful host and breakfast cook, making us very welcome and sharing their splendid home with us. It was so imaginatively decorated and furnished, so much better than a run of the mill B&B Bedrooms comfortable and spacious, the guests sitting room a bonus.Garden and studio interesting and delightful with Jane happy to show us the hens. It will be difficult to find a better place to stay. Hope to go back.

Beautiful period house with large bedroom, bathroom and lounge. Interesting features everywhere, open views across to the Yorkshire Moors and a short stroll to either the town centre or West Cliff. Very enjoyable stay with welcoming hosts.

Ian, Birmingham

More than fulfilled expectations. The weather was atrocious but despite this, the warmth of our welcome, the glamour, comfort and central location of this impossibly beautiful Georgian house complete with gorgeous garden, homegrown produce and freshly laid eggs from incumbent hens made for a wonderful stay. We enjoyed a very large beautifully appointed bedroom, our own sitting room and a bathroom, complete with huge freestanding claw bath to die for. It was a wrench to leave our very urbane hosts for home. It even has parking! It does have four flights of stairs, so good knees necessary.

Carolyn, Harrogate

This is a fabulous find! Beautiful house and Wonderful hosts! Immaculate decor, so light and airy and obviously a much loved house. We were made to feel very welcome. We thought we were the only guests as we never heard a peep from anyone else, so don't worry at all about the shared bathroom, which is huge and luxurious! Everything was spotless and fresh, the breakfast was perfect. We took our little dog who was welcomed with hugs and kisses..as were we!! One to keep to hand ready for our next trip! X

Julie, Sheffield

This beautiful Georgian house with it`s superbly artistic and elegant design and furnishing exceeded our every expectations. We were made to feel warmly welcome by the owner, Richard, who also ensured a great stay with his advice as to what we should visit in Whitby as well as providing us with a superb breakfast after a perfect night`s sleep in such a wonderfully romantic bedroom. Absolutely the very best stay in our 14 day tour aound England and Scotland !

Nick, Veere

A wonderful welcome, superb building. Ideal location which enables you explore Whitby. We felt relaxed and Richard's breakfasts are to be recommended. We will definitely return! The weather was an added bonus.

A wonderful 2 night stay over the Easter weekend. A stunning house full of character and charm, just like the hosts. Richard and Jane welcomed us into their lovely home and really added to what was a great weekend. The house is presented so well with period features throughout and Richards beautiful artwork really adding a warm feel to the house. The large bedroom was perfect with a lovely view. The shared bathroom is no problem whatsoever. Please don't let this put you off. We really do recommend this place, it made our weekend in Whitby truly wonderful!

My partner and I had a wonderful stay here. Both rooms are delightful, we were in the blue room with a huge bay window overlooking the well tendered garden and views of the moors. The adjacent bathroom is huge with a great claw bath and large walk-in shower. Richard is a good host, who served up a hearty breakfast and was very knowledgable on the local area. Lots of interesting artwork in a beautiful house. Will recommend to others.

Beautifully restored Georgian house, a pretty garden, with an enviable artist's studio. Our bedrooms were both attractively fitted out, and the Blue Room had particularity stunning views towards the moorland. The delicious, cooked breakfast, served downstairs in the kitchen, set us up for the day. Richard was a charming and knowledgeable host, full of ideas as to where we could visit whatever the weather. The house is very close to all Whitby’s main attractions, and there are some fantastic restaurants for dinner. We would definitely come back, and would thoroughly recommend it.

A very pleasant stay. A home with interesting architectural features, lovely garden and studio to visit too!

A pearl amongst Whitby's jet! I still can't quite believe we were lucky enough to find this place! This is a beautiful, peaceful, restful and elegant house, with gorgeous bedrooms, a bathroom to die for and a scrumptious breakfast served by our very friendly and thoroughly helpful host Richard. An absolute delight to stay here, superb value for money, with wonderful rooms and luxurious decor to make our weekend truly special. Utterly, completely, thoroughly recommended, and we will be back - I think we've found a new favourite place!

Fantastic. The house is beautiful and the owners have a great eye for detail. The owners create a convivial atmosphere. Breakfast is as good as anything we have had. Then there is the price which is absurdly low.

Local points of interest from Richard & Jane Pottas

  • Union Place is an Adam Style Georgian town house, built in 1790. The current owners have been at pains to preserve the integrity of the property, whilst acknowledging that we are now in the 21st century.
  • Very elegant, you are immediately aware of the houses past when entering the splendid hall with its ornate covings, and panelled doors, flanked by grandfather clocks, and plaster casts depicting figures from antiquity.
  • Union Place was built at the height of the towns prosperity for a local banker. ln 1790 the house stood in splendid isolation, facing north south. The south facing gardens are still in the original terraces as when first laid out
  • Only five minutes walk from the cliff top, and ten minutes from the centre of town and the harbour, Union Place is ideally situated, almost appearing aloof from the hustle and bustle of the town below. Both roadside and garage parking available.
  • Whitby is a town of immense historical significance, and enables visitors to experience all aspects of the coast and surrounding moors. Blessed with a range of fine dining options to suite all pockets and palettes, within walking distance of Union Place.
  • Union Place is now the proud owner of its own chickens, you can go and pick your own eggs for breakfast if you so wish !
