The Experience

You’re on the outskirts of culture-rich Hillsborough and breakfast is served in the dining room of the owners’ traditional 18th-century pink cottage. You stay in one of two New England-styled rooms in a separate stone cottage with a sitting room, real fire and kitchen. Fresh flowers and underfloor heating add to the warm feel.

Food is taken seriously and is delicious. Susan’s a passionate cook and Willie’s potato bread is a classic. Garden jams, fluffy pancake stacks with pistachio crumb and specials like poached egg on crushed pesto potatoes make breakfast worth getting up for.

Retreat to your homely cottage or the flower-filled gardens to relax. There’s plenty of space and lovely views over green County Down. If you don’t know the area then just ask Susan – she’ll happily get maps out and help plan trips.

What a delight to stay in this idyllic location with views of The Mournes. The welcome from Susan and Willie was second to none. The cottage and surrounding area are stunning and convenient for exploration of nearby Hillsborough - a visit to the castle and its magnificent gardens are a must. The cottage is so comfortable and well-appointed, the beds are luxurious - lovely to crawl into after a busy day! This place is really a home from home and all credit must go to the fantastic hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble! And the breakfast menu is worthy of any 5-star hotel.

From the moment we arrived, absolutely everything was perfect. Not only is the accommodation beautiful and spotless, but Susan goes the extra mile to ensure you have everything you need (& more) to enjoy your stay. Home baked cake and coffee on arrival, a wonderfully comfy, large bed and the most delicious breakfast. Hillsborough is a lovely town with lots of great places to eat and little shops to explore. Susan and Willie are lovely people and their love for their home and the B&B shines through. I can't praise the hospitality and accommodation highly enough.

We came for the building, breakfast, and reviews, but left astonished at Susan's generous hospitality. We came to Hillsborough to explore our roots, and Susan went above and beyond to help us find the places we wanted to go and introduce us to people we needed to meet. What was already was a special trip became extraordinary. Susan has found her calling in hospitality. We loved her B&B so much we struggled to leave. I would come back without a doubt - and I don't think we would leave her place at all, but rather use it as our tranquil home.

In all my 65 years and 60 countries visited, I've not experienced such a place to lay my head, whether hotel or B&B. It is by far the cleanest, most tidy, organized B&B I've visited. Susan and Willie are wonderful people. The air is clean, the breakfast is comparable to the New York Hilton. Put this on your list to stay. Trust me.

Bill, Kiedrich

Having heard stories from Susan and Willie about everything there is to do in Hillsborough, I can't believe I haven't been there before! This is a historic and fascinating bit of Northern Ireland. With so much to see and do, this is a great place to call home for a few days, with Susan's really special breakfast creations setting you up for the day.

The neighbourhood

The gardens burst with wisteria, clematis, azaleas and rhododendrons. Walk up and beyond to a lookout for five-county views over the Carlingford Hills and Mourne Mountains. Bay Tree is on a country road which leads to Georgian Hillsborough. Visit the newly-refurbished castle, now run by Historic Royal Palaces with its gardens, forest and fort; dine at Hara or the turf-fired Hillside Bar. Susan’s happy to drop guests into the village for the evening (a five-minute drive) or head to Belfast, a 20-minute taxi drive.

Local points of interest from Susan McCague

  • Set in the heart of the rolling Co Down countryside, BTB is only 5 minutes’ drive from the picturesque Georgian village of Hillsborough. This beautiful and unique village offers historic attractions such as The Castle, The Courthouse & Hillsborough Forest.
  • If you are in search of high quality cuisine, you will be spoilt for choice with a number of local restaurants listed in the Michelin Guide. Hillsborough also offers a variety of high end fashion and bridal boutiques.
  • If you fancy a stroll around the village, you will be able to spend a couple of happy hours pottering around the gift shops and stopping for a coffee, enjoying the ambience.
  • The bustling city of Belfast, located just 20 minutes away, is a must visit. The Titanic Exhibition, recently named the ‘World’s Leading Tourist Attraction’ at the 2016 World Travel Awards, is the jewel in the crown.
  • A short drive east will bring you to Newcastle, and the famous Co. Down coastline, where “The mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea.”
  • Another area of interest is the stunning North Antrim Coastline, which is under two hours’ drive away and where The British Open is to be staged at Royal Portrush in 2019. While there, you must visit the world-renowned Giant’s Causeway.

Susan McCague

Susan and Willie aim for a stylish, home-from-home feel with this unusual B&B set-up. Former teacher Susan has her finger in many local pies and they joke that Willie – who designed and built the guest cottage – is like Fawlty Towers’ Manuel. They love talking about Hillsborough and try to give guests a very special experience; thoughtful extras like homemade cakes or high tea in the garden can be whipped up with a bit of notice.
