The stunning drawing room, with pier-glass mirror, baby grand and enveloping sofas, is reason enough to come; the food, served in a candlelit deep-sage dining room, is delicious too, with produce from the farm. A home full of life where you’re treated as friends – your hosts are delightful, helped along by a very personable Jack Russell. It’s peaceful, too, on the Aberdeenshire Castle Trail. The handsome farmhouse has been in the family since 1762 and you can roam the rolling 300 acres. Inside: flowers, polished furniture, Persian rugs, family portraits and supremely comfortable bedrooms with fine linen. “A blissful haven,” says a guest.

Having visited a number of Sawday's great places over the years - Lynturk Farm is rising above the rest. It would be hard to find better hosts and home cooking in Scotland. Driving through the most beautiful and rural countryside we finally found ourselves in a completely different world. Totally relaxed and free of modern gadgets we spent a fantastic weekend here in the great company of two other couples, who we never met before. Our three year old son slept like a baby, while we were spoilt to bits with wonderful food, wine, anecdotes and laughter in this beautiful old family home.
