The Experience

Take time to get to know this lovely area 30 minutes up the A90 from Dundee… golfers, fisher-people, walkers, and horticultural and history buffs will love it.

Settle down to much comfort and generous hospitality at this handsome 1740s home. Rose is a passionate gardener and you’re very welcome to wander in the grounds she’s nurtured for more than 30 years and designed for every season. Linger on a seat, play lawn croquet, admire the fruit and vegetables in the walled garden. Plants gifted by the late Queen Mother from nearby Glamis Castle still flourish here.

Stephen delivers the day’s weather forecast at breakfast. Rose (who is Cordon Bleu trained) will check what you’d like to eat, everything fresh and local; perhaps an Arbroath Smokie, or mealie pudding, garden fruit and yogurt, and just-baked bread. Do arrange to have dinner; it will feature the best of home-grown and Angus food.

Location

The neighbourhood

In fine Angus farming land (asparagus and soft fruit a speciality), Newtonmill’s walled garden is much admired by garden groups, and Edzell Castle’s impressive formal garden, five minutes’ drive, is a great draw too. Edzell also has a 9 and 18-hole golf course and good places to eat including Sinclair’s Larder, The Tweed Warehouse and Glen Esk Hotel. It’s 20 minutes to coastal Montrose and Arbroath and 30 to Dundee for the Baxter Park gardens and the popular V&A.

Local points of interest from Rose & Stephen Rickman

  • Glamis Castle and all the events they host including vintage car rally.
  • Golf courses including St Andrews, Carnoustie, Montrose, Strathmore and Edzell (5 minutes).
  • Salmon and sea trout fishing on both the North Esk and South Esk Rivers and River Isla.
  • The Historical North Sea towns of Stonehaven, Montrose and Arbroath.
  • Fantastic beaches at St Cyrus with the nature reserve and Lunan Bay with the Red Castle.
  • Numerous Bird watching RSPB sites, both in the Angus Glens and at the coast.Walks for all abilities.

Introducing

Rose & Stephen Rickman

Keen gardener and accomplished cook Rose, and engineer Stephen, brought up their family at Newtonmill while restoring it and developing the garden. The children grown, they now thoroughly enjoy sharing their home and their lovely and productive garden with guests, and helping them discover this richly historic, wildlife-abundant and accessible area of Eastern Scotland that they know so well.
