The Experience

Peace, beauty, seclusion… no roads, no cars, a turbine, solar panels – welcome to the island of Shuna. With your own boat you can stock up in Oban and visit nearby Craobh Haven (eat at the pub or take a cruise to Correvreckan Whirlpool, one of many local wonders). The island’s cottages are owned and maintained by enthusiastic, charismatic Eddie: South End House, with spell-binding views south to Jura; Boat House, high on stilts, with a boat shed below to the jetty; and Garden House, bow-windowed, white and pretty, 200m up the track. Spot otters, seals, eagles, deer, picnic on unspoilt beaches, chop logs, catch fish… Then it’s back home to books, games and pure spring water. Backing onto dense woodland, Garden House is well-proportioned inside, with bedrooms up and down and a homely feel. Spacious, light-filled Boat House, newly encased in wood and cosily furnished in Scandi style, comes with a kitchen that’s a pleasure to work in and a wood-burner that belts out the heat. Pleasures here are simple but rich, and walkers, dogs and kids will adore it.

Fantastic place to visit, especially for the walks and wildlife from seals to sea otters deer and dolphins we saw them all. Having the use of the boat is fantastic to sail around the Island and surrounding areas. The boathouse was clean and well stocked with everything you would need to accommodate a self catering holiday. Had great fun chopping trees down for firewood and then cranking the wood burner up. We took our dog and he loved every moment especially splashing in the clear Atlantic sea, be warned that you should always have a tick collar. thanks to Cathryn and Rob...great hosts

Local points of interest from Andrew Gully

  • Guardian writer Dixe Wills declared "Shuna: the overlooked jewel off the west of Scotland" in his recent article featuring our special place to stay. Read the article on our website, listed above.
  • Shuna lies in the heart of the biggest archipelago in the British Isles. Dozens of islands offer countless coves to explore and stunning views to enjoy. Colours change with the sea's mood in what is a paradise for boatmen, fishermen and artists alike.
  • Between these islands lie some of the world's most stunning tidal races. The Gulf of Corryvreckan between Jura and Scarba, the world's third largest whirlpool, is the most famous, but the pass of the Gray Dog, just to the north, can be even more dramatic!
  • The islands, including Shuna, are home to European Otter and Red Deer, Roe Deer and Fallow Deer. Atlantic Grey Seals, Minke Whale, Bottlenose Dolphin, and Harbour Porpoise are regular marine visitors. Golden and White-tailed Sea Eagles scour land and sea.
  • Visit the bustling local town of Oban. Try the delicously fresh seafood or tour the whisky distillery. Take the kids or yourselves to the Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary on nearby Loch Creran. Try some fly fishing on Loch Awe side. Argyll has so much to offer!
