The Experience

Breathe deep – you won’t find air much clearer. Days are for wild walks, dipping into the sea and feeling the wind in your hair. Take a boat trip to the isle of Gigha for sandy beaches and grilled halibut at The Boathouse restaurant.

The sun terrace is the perfect spot for gazing or to set up your sketchbook; the views are all the inspiration you need. Experience the kind of time to yourself you only really get when you’re in the middle of nowhere.

When you’re ready for adventure or need a reminder there are other humans in the world head to Campbeltown. Stock up on local cheeses and biscuits at the Kintyre Larder before heading to the Seafield Hotel for live music, best enjoyed with whisky in hand. Evenings are for the terrace – bring charcoal for the barbecue and cook up a feast.

New Orleans has it all: spectacular views, peace and wildlife all seen from the sun room, which looks straight out into the bay. Venture outside and fill your lungs with fresh sea air, immediately feeling the reward for your efforts to get here. Buy some wonderful local produce and enjoy staying in this cosy cottage on the southern coast of Kintyre only 3 miles from Campbeltown.

Location

The neighbourhood

The star of the show here is nature. You’re blissfully remote with native woodland behind and waves crashing in front. The wildlife spotting is second to none; porpoises, dolphins, basking sharks and seals. Look skywards for eagles.

Local points of interest from Emma Turner

  • New Orleans is located on Kildalloig estate, a family run 4,000 acre hill farm just south of Campbeltown. We are lucky to enjoy plenty of wildlife – peregrine falcons, porpoise, basking sharks, otters, seals and sea-birds are regular visitors
  • Set against the rugged beauty of the sea and wild landscape of the peninsula, Kildalloig spreads over 1 mile of coastline and beaches and rises gradually to about 1,200 feet at its highest point with spectacular views over the islands
  • Davaar Island is part of the estate and is a prominent feature of the magnificent view from New Orleans . The island can only be reached on foot at low tide each day when the causeway, known locally as “the Dhorlin” is uncovered for 4-6 hours
  • Pack a picnic and head out to Westport beach - a 20 min drive to the Machrihanish side - where waves from the Atlantic make it perfect boogie boarding/surfing, as well as miles of white sandy beach for walks. It is a great way to blow away the cob webs!
  • For whiskey lovers, a must is the Springbank distillery tour to see the traditional production of award winning whiskey in Campbeltown - or take the opportunity to make a detour en route to the famous whiskey producing islands of Islay and Jura
  • A great day trip is Ghigha island where the daily ferry runs throughout the year and is a 20min drive. There is a fabulous seafood restaurant on the island and some of the best wild swimming in the area

Introducing

Emma Turner

Owner Emma comes here as often as she can. The cottage sits on her family’s farm and when she’s off travelling the world - working in the humanitarian sector - her parents are on hand to help with any queries. Apart from another small cottage nearby, you’ll be sharing the land with some peaceful sheep; they make for friendly neighbours.
