Handsome in its glen; a traditional family farmhouse full of old-fashioned comfort with charming, well-travelled owners and friendly dogs. In peaceful bedrooms with leafy views, solid antiques jostle with photos, flowers, bowls of fruit, and magazines on country matters. There are capacious bath tubs, robes – and suppers for walkers: the Southern Upland Way passes nearby. Breakfasts are properly fortifying and evening meals can be simple or elaborate, often with game or fresh salmon. Convenient for ferries to Belfast and Larne; Galloway gardens and golf courses are close too – return to a snug sitting room with an open fire.

We enjoyed a very comfortable and relaxing night at Chlenry Farmhouse before catching the ferry to Ireland. Two friendly dogs welcomed us but were shooed to the kitchen by Ginny who showed us to our spacious and well appointed bedroom overlooking the garden and the separate traditional bathroom (no shower but plenty of hot water for deep baths). The house is tastefully furnished with a separate sitting room for guests and we enjoyed a delicious supper and full breakfast in the attractive dining room. Ginny and David are congenial, interesting hosts who made us feel very welcome. Recommended.
