The Experience

This handsome Victorian mansion stands in the widest residential street in Edinburgh, a 20-minute walk from Holyrood Park and a quick bus ride into the centre. Two streets away is the lively Old Bell, serving real ale and Scottish fare… but for peacefulness and views you could not be better placed.

Start the day with breakfast in the morning room: cooked or continental, it’s one of the best. End the day with a stroll in the garden. Here, everything is a treat, from the log fires lit at the first chill to the decanters of whisky replenished every day. All thanks to your hostess, warm-hearted, generous Gill.

Catch the bus from the end of the road into the centre for booming cannons, the castle with its Crown Jewels, the medieval Old Town, Botanic Gardens and a myriad of restaurants. Return to delicious chocolates in your large, luxurious room.

Stayed at the stunning luxurious place in April and the owners were so friendly . Nothing was too much trouble . They place was decorated to a top standard with a beautiful en-suite. It was spotlessly clean. All the rooms have views but we had a view of the large garden. Perfect place to retreat from the city but only a short walk into the centre and a bus at the end of the street takes you to Princes Street in a 10 minutes . The location is perfect and very peaceful. Would highly recommend and will definitely return . Thank you Paul & Gill for being such wonderful hosts.

The neighbourhood

The house sits in a conservation area, surrounded by architecture, churches and gardens. It is close to Morningside, Bruntsfield and the Meadows, and a 20-minute walk to Holyrood Park. Buses run into the centre from the end of the road, and speciality and antique shops lie temptingly close.

Local points of interest from Gillian Hunter

  • We are fortunate enough to have many beautiful walks on our doorstep. Located only 10 minutes walk away is The Meadows, one of Edinburgh’s most beautiful Parks.
  • Only 1.5km away is Blackford Hill and The Hermitage where you will see the best views of Edinburgh and enjoy a walk through the Forrest and why not finish off at the Cafe for a refreshing drink and some home baked cakes.
  • Visit Arthur Seat a prominent rocky hill with panoramic views of the City and beyond. Where young girls have been known to bathe their faces in the dew on May Day to stay young and beautiful. So many routes for hill walkers and worthy of spending a day!
  • Flotterstone & The Pentlands offering trails and scenic countryside walks , great spot by the Loch for a picnic. Free car park and a beautiful Inn with a beer garden where you can enjoy a lovely lunch.
  • You may enjoy some interesting shopping off the beaten track where locals mingle and chat over a coffee. Then visited Morningside & Bruntsfield where shops restaurants , cafes and bars are Plentiful
  • Edinburgh Castle is a 20 minutes stroll away or you may prefer to play golf at some of our local Golf courses The Braids only 3km away, Craigmiller Park & Mortonhall golf clubs are popular courses.

Gillian Hunter

The Hunters have lived in this house for years and brought up their family here. Gill was introduced to hospitality by her mother-in-law, who ran an upmarket B&B. Gill's passion is cooking and entertaining but she is a talented home-maker too, filling the house with artwork, candles and flowers (often from the garden).
