Close to the trendy Shore area, and only a 20-minute stroll from Princes Street, this craggily handsome house feels as if it’s in the country. The tree-lined garden opens onto lush parkland, and the Water of Leith runs by. The perfect proportions of the 17th-century townhouse, once home to the Balfour family, exudes a sense of timelessness. Lovely owners, Philip and Debbie, have created a smart, modern but cottagey feel in their Garden Apartment. The sunny blue sitting-room has a Persian rug on oak floors and flame-effect fire; the bedroom and pin-neat bathroom feel cosy and cossetting – bathrobes and slippers, organic Scottish soaps and lotions, tip-top linen. Both airy rooms have those peaceful garden and park views. The pretty, low-ceilinged kitchen has a Belfast sink and wood worktops – everything gleams and it’s fabulously equipped too. You want for nothing (WiFi, binoculars, books, large DVD library, maps, welcoming whisky, fruit, flowers… as well as membership of the Scotch Malt Whisky premises during your stay). Owners are on hand to help, and there’s the boon of a free car parking space.

Over many years we have stayed in Edinburgh in many different types of places. However none of these places meet our requirements as well as Pilrig House - and this is proven by the fact that we have been returning regularly to stay there whenever possible for approximately the last 7 years. The apartment is furnished to a 5 star level, is spotlessly clean and homely too. It is in a quiet yet convenient location. We have a reserved parking space right outside the front door. Pilrig House is easily walkable both into the city and to Leith, but also has superb public transport connections.

Anne, Bedford area

If it were possible to give the Pilrig House more than 5 stars, we would. We have travelled, extensively throughout the world, renting houses and apartments, and have never been as pleased and impressed as we were with the accommodations and hosts as we were with the Pilrig House. The only negative is that we think that our future lodgings will pale in comparison to the Pilrig House. The apartment was spotlessly clean, furnished beautifully and fully equipped to meet every possible need. The location was perfect, too.

A charming, quiet, comfortable, spotlessly clean and incredibly well equipped Garden Apartment at Pilrig House was, for us, the ideal choice in magnificent Edinburgh. We stayed a week in June 2014 and found it very conveniently located - a stone's throw from town (with a direct bus connection) but superbly quiet with the envious distinction of opening onto a wonderful park (which at one time was a part of the Pilrig House Estate. Debbie and Philip are wonderful and helpful hosts - Philip has some useful insights on what to see and possibly what not too! All in all a very memorable stay.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Debbie Martin

  • You are a walk away from Edin city centre (1.2 miles) & half a mile from the trendy 'Shore' area of Leith - great bars, shops, galleries & eateries, incl. Michelin Star restaurants The Kitchin & Martin Wishart at the Shore.. Super Farmers Market on Sat's.
  • Your front gate opens on to parkland, so it is a peaceful place to stay - there is a little seating area in front of your apartment - a suspot. Or, stroll along the Water of Leith walkway nearby to see The Royal Yacht Britannia which is docked in Leith.
  • Stroll to Edin's Botanical Gardens - a joy in all seasons. Or jump on the No 36 bus (which is right at the entrance to Pilrig House). The hop-on, hop-off Majestic Bus Tour leaves from the same bus-stop & the lovely Georgian New Town can be seen en route.
  • Walk to Leith & browse one of Scotland's largest antique emporiums - Georgian Antiques - an experience. Over several floors, you could get lost inside for a week! Afterwards, head to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's The Vaults for lunch (membership incl.)
  • Try a day- course at The New Town Cookery School while here - great fun and inspirational. I (Debbie, the owner) can vouch for it. Curries From Around The World next on my list! Or, if inspired, look at taking an art course at the nearby Leith Art School.
  • Only a few minutes' walk away is The Biscuit Factory - where you can enjoy the Edinburgh Gin Tour. A stroll up Leith Walk next, which has a highly eclectic collection of shops, from the Sicilian Bakery to Elvis Shakespeare or McNaughton's Bookshop
