The Experience

The tap-tap of woodpeckers and singsong of birds are the soundtrack to a stay at Kincaple, a quaint hamlet three miles from St Andrews. The two low, stone cottages – former stables – rest in the pretty, sheltered courtyard of Kincaple House, next to the Coach House where Claudia lives.

Inside each, it’s all top quality – Le Creuset in the kitchen, Villeroy & Bosch in the bathrooms. Relax by the wood-burning stove with a glass of wine, ears pricked for the rustle of sea breezes; deer, badgers, swallows and swifts, and perhaps Claudia’s two dogs, may come to call. You’re welcome to use the garden at the Coach House and there are woodsheds for stashing bikes or for children to use as a den.

Walk to beaches or count birds (or birdies – St Andrews Links is a putt to the east, the Bay a touch further). Ancient St Andrews town is close with its university, vast cathedral and many fine shops and restaurants, the East Neuk coastline a short drive.

Lovely cottages tastefully furnished in a beautiful spot. Contained everything we needed and more with very well supplied kitchen. Beautiful views of the sea from the kitchen and delightful courtyard with outdoor seating , constant birdsong. It was within easy reach of St Andrews and the rest of the Fife coast. We will return.

We had a wonderful week at West Sands cottage. The cottage was of a very high standard with lovely furnishings and a very well equipped kitchen. Claudia’s recommendations were fantastic and really added to our holiday experience. We have already booked to return!

A tranquil haven to return to after a long day exploring and enjoying the sights and activities of this outstanding coastline and famous town. A perfect 19th hole for anyone on a golfing holiday!

What a haven of loveliness this place is. Tucked away but still handy for St Andrews, it offers all the perks of an exclusive boutique hotel but with the added bonus of loads of extra space, a fantastically equipped kitchen a wonderful cosy wood burning stove - & it's dog friendly. Claudia went out of her way (sometimes literally!) to make sure we had everything we needed to make our stay perfect & although we intended this to be just a short break to look at the Uni it ended up being one of the most relaxing breaks ever. Highly recommended (just make sure there's room for us when we come back

What a charming, luxurious and stylish place. I had such a great time. The owners couldn't have been more helpful, the welcome pack was astonishingly generous and everything was so comfortable and warm thanks to the log fire and underfloor heating. I slept like one of the logs in down-softened luxury. It's a beautiful place - just outside St Andrews - with everything glowing in the hypotenuse light of early Spring and the multi-lingual birdsong in the morning. Most places I stay give me what I expect. The difference at Kincaple Stables is that I got what I hoped for. It was outstanding.

This was our second visit to Kincaple but certainly not our last. The garden was full of snow drops. The cottage itself was gorgeous, faultless, very stylish. The shortbread and coffee was just what we needed after a long journey. The whiskey, too. Our host, Claudia was cheery, helpful and very unobtrusive. Loved it. Will be back soon for summer on the beaches nearby, for sure.

The neighbourhood

Take the single-track road – edged by wildflower verges and frothy cow parsley – through the small hamlet of Kincaple, past neat little cottages with colourful gardens. Turn off into a shady wooded area which opens into a sunny glade where you’ll find the coach house and both stable cottages, set around a courtyard. It’s less than 10 minutes’ drive to St Andrews where you’ll find tea shops, cafes, restaurants; stock up on supplies from Balgove Larder on the way home. The Peat Inn (traditional, with a Michelin star) is 15 minutes away. The Fife Coastal Path, beaches, and golf can be reached in mere moments.
