Glorious West Coast walks, lochs, trails, nature...a hidden Highlands gem for hikers. Relax by a log-burner, breakfast well at one big table

Read guest comments

The perfect spot for walkers and climbers (single-track roads, lochs, rivers and mountains) and the perfect B&B for groups: three smart, uncluttered bedrooms have flexible sleeping arrangements and spick and span shower rooms. The guest sitting room is light and airy with binoculars, books to borrow, maps and a small fridge for your wine – stay put for glorious sunsets and views to Harris. Breakfast time abounds with good seasonal food; breads, yoghurt and jams are all homemade, and you eat round a big table. There’s a drying room and bike storage, but those wanting to relax will love it here too.

  • Applecross peninsular is on the doorstep. It’s an adventure getting there, over the famous Bealach; NC500 & National Geographic top drive. Climb 2000 ft in 6 heart stopping miles. Be rewarded by amazing scenery, great beach, heritage centre and tasty food.
  • View SeaEagles nesting on Shieldaig Island (guests lounge overlooks). Witness courtship acrobatics in spring from these giants. Otters pop up around low tide in our sea-loch, along with seals. Red deer in Torridon glen. Red squirrels re-introduced 2016.
  • Bienn Eighe National Nature reserve offers rare habitat, trails and a visitor centre. Pine marten, crossbills, red squirrels, black throated divers and so much more. The mountain trail treats you to unsurpassed views over Loch Maree.
  • Take a 'Sea Tour' from Shieldaig for a good chance of seeing seals, dolphins, basking sharks and whales; divers, gannets and sometimes puffins. The all day tours allow you to get to places not accessible from the road and you get a seafood feast at lunch.
  • Inverewe Gardens and Eilean Donan Castle are world class attractions within easy reach. Eilean Donan castle is the most photographed castle in Scotland. Wonder at the dedication to create such an amazing garden from barren rock & bog Inverewe NT Garden.
  • Discover original works of art, inspired by ancient landscapes and incredible light. We are lucky to have a incredible local talent in so many genres. Follow the South West Ross ‘Arts & Eats Trail’. Copies of the trail available at Aurora + local advice.

"We had a really wonderful time in the Shieldaig area and Aurora was the perfect place to stay. Very comfortable spacious room and an excellent lounge with views across the loch and a telescope to try and spot the Sea eagles on Shieldaig island. Ann runs a first class establishment with the highest standards of comfort and a ready willingness to share information about everything that the area offers. We cannot recommend more highly."

"This was an exceptionally comfortable and well run B&B with unbelievable views across the bay. Ann has a real eye for detail and has thought through all sorts of ideas to make her guests more comfortable (such as a fridge with fresh milk for morning tea!) Her published green policy for reducing her carbon footprint is also most impressive, but best of all, she really knows the area - all her suggestions and recommendations about what to do and where to go were absolutely first rate, and really added to our enjoyment of our stay. We couldn't recommend more highly."
