Inshriach House

Aviemore, Highland

Wild swim in the Spey, fish for trout in the loch, tug bell-pulls, descend from four-posters, play snooker. History and comfort abound

10 bedrooms

Sleeps 17

Brilliant value, and history buffs will be in heaven. Original central heating, deep cast-iron baths, loos with wooden seats, a 1920s squash court, a galleried landing with a cupola and a large conservatory with a bed for lounging. Bedrooms have been updated, Mrs Black’s Room is rather posh, the twin is called the Nursery, all have lovely views and their bell-pulls intact. Sadly the servants do not arrive, but you can have a chef with a waitress if you want to be cooked for. The kitchen has a big pine table, a cosy Aga, pots and pans and stylish retro touches, and a scullery area for washing up. The house is big enough to escape from others if you choose: the many-seated main drawing room opens onto a south-facing terrace, there are two dining rooms, a sitting room with books and games, and, in the acre-rich gardens, a sunken snooker table and a bonfire pit. Nooks and crannies abound, stairs are safe and wide – children will adore chasing around inside as well as out. The trout loch is stocked, you can fish on the Spey, stalk, shoot, bike, mountaineer. Delightfully bohemian. Ask Walter about glamping…
