The Experience

Once a sporting lodge, now an impressively designed retreat for groups with a taste for the understatedly luxurious and the opportunity to do little, or lots. Rooms are large, light and super-comfortable with great views and works of art; there’s a separate bothy, a Scandinavian-style kitchen-with-everything; a wood-panelled dining room and everywhere arts and craft touches in the Scottish style.

Clubs are provided for golfers on the lodge’s own 9-hole, par 28 course. Take a spin on the bikes, and some of Will’s choice 100+ local walks. Compete with the ospreys for a trout from the pond – rods are provided, as are racquets and balls for the all-weather court.

Soak away any aches in the hot tub; summer dining out on the wide stone terrace is a treat, so is sitting by one of the log fires, maybe with a dram from the Speyside or Dalwhinnie distillery.

The neighbourhood

The lodge is ringed by its gardens and the rest of the 90-acre estate, and a 10-minute drive from Kingussie with train station and restaurants (try the Bistro and The Cross). You're a short walk to the bird-rich Insh marshes and a 15-minute drive to all the water sports of Loch Insh. Go Spey fishing; visit the Speyside distillery; there are walks galore and two mountain bikes to borrow.

Local points of interest from the Tulloch family

  • The house comes with its own private nine-hole golf course kept to an immaculate condition, an all-weather tennis court, and access to fishing on the Spey. A cook and housekeeper can be arranged on request.
  • The house sits on the western edge of the Cairngorm Mountains. The walking is spectacular. It is well worth climbing the Munro "Sgoran," hiking up the rivers Tromie and Feshie, exploring the Inshriach Forest, or a more adventurous hike through Glen Einich.
  • Old Milton is fifteen minutes from the bustling Highland town of Aviemore, the launchpad of many cycling, canyoning, wild swimming and horse riding adventures in the summer, and skiing expeditions in the winter.
  • The imposing ruin of Ruthven Barracks near Old Milton provides a reminder of the Highland's troubled history, a history that can be further explored at Culloden Battlefield forty-five minutes further north.
  • Loch Insh is five minutes away from Old Milton and offers sailing, wind-surfing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and mountain biking year-round.
  • The greenkeeper is a qualified golf instructor and clay pigeon shooting is available on request.

the Tulloch family

Tulloch family holidays were spent in this lovely area and in 2009 Will and his brothers took over Old Milton Lodge and set about restoring, extending and furnishing it, beautifully. He is based in Aldershot, with his wife Jemima and their children so guests are greeted by groundsman and Highlander Willy McKenzie, and his wife Ann; they know everything about the region and gladly share it.
