The
Experience

Over the lip of Loch Sunart, tucked into the land of heather and old oak, crouches The Ruin amid manicured lawns. From its windows not a trace of development can be spied; within its old walls, stone blends with pitch pine. This is a place for two to roost and lovely Lois shows you around. It’s open-plan, almost one big room, so pad across heated tiles in your socks, bake bread in your spotless kitchen, bathe in your enclosed shower and tub, drift off on your plump bed. A whisper away is the Byre – hand-made bunks, second bathroom and TV – a dinky abode that sleeps two youngsters securely yet fills their minds with freedom. Grab binoculars and stride off for the mountains or the silken shore, bird-spot until sundown. Browse the wildlife books back at base and, when the tide ebbs, poke around to see what gems the rock pools have offered up. Logs, linen, games, an old film on DVD – all yours to enjoy as you settle in by the wood-burner. Sit on the terrace while supper spits on the barbecue, watch oyster catchers come and go out on the wide cerulean water. Soothingly wild.

Reviews

The Ruin is a uniquely designed well equipped holiday cottage, in a beautiful setting over looking a sea loch surrounded by hills. At times the silence is palpable and the beauty of the light on the land and loch is breathtaking. Wild life abounds, golden eagles soar over the hills, seals and otters frequent the loch, where gannets can be seen diving. A pine marten and hedgehog visit the garden. The Ruin is a place to relax and enjoy all that Ardnamurchan has to offer. Lois and Richard's hospitality makes a holiday at Lochside Follies special and one to remember.

Local points of interest from Lois & Richard Livett

  • Once you have arrived at the Ruin stop and listen to the peace and quiet, however it may be shattered by the odd Oyster Catcher or Reed Wardler. Look out for White Tailed Sea Eagles, sightings are more frequent these days.
  • Otters and seals are often sighted from the door of the Ruin. A pair of binoculars are provided. The best times to see otters are when the tide is half in or half out, they could be feeding or playing in the shallows.
  • Many of our customers have been rewarded by a nocturnal visit to the bird table by a pine marten. They love berries or peanut butter, but don't give them jam, its not good for their teeth.
  • Follow the natural paths around our grounds...find the rustic seats and stop a while, smell the wild garlic in the spring, scuff the leaves in the autumn.
  • The white shell sand beaches at Sanna and Portuairk, 1/2 an hours drive away to the west are not to be missed.
  • Catch a ferry to Tobermory, excellent day out leaving the car at Kilchoan. Have lunch at Cafe Fish...yum.
