Borrow the bikes, surf the beaches, fly-fish on the river Col – it runs past the house. Bask in beauty and lap up the views

The Longhouse is architect designed and on the family croft, with houses behind and views across grass rushes to the sea. Clad in stone and larch that's slowly turning silver, this beautiful single-storey house has a pop-out balcony too. Inside all is polished, perfect, and flooded with light. Bedrooms, bathrooms and living space seamlessly spread themselves out, with the kitchen down a couple of steps and the mezzanine above (a sofa-bedded sitting space teens will love, with computer and WiFi). Imagine white walls, bleached wood and touches of pale blue – a cool, pared-back décor in serene Scandi style. Glass doors glide open to a wraparound deck, perfect for a sundowner at dusk or a barbecue on a warm night. South-facing bedrooms have fabulous touches – modern chandeliers, Harris tweed throws – and from the bath you look up and see the stars. Empty beaches abound on Lewis, as do tiny coves. Spot grey geese, corncrakes and Lapwing heron in the rushes; fish for trout on the river. There's a farmers' market in Stornoway, and shops in the village, a ten-minute stroll.

Local points of interest from Linda Macleod Brown:

Local points of interest from
Linda Macleod Brown:

  • Fly here in less than an hour from Edinburgh or Glasgow! .. or take a few more hours and enjoy the roadtrip and ferry to a different world!
  • Great walks on the doorstep, from local beach 50 yards away to moor, whatever the weather.
  • Follow the Eat Drink Hebrides Trail, buy fresh scallops, crab, fish, cheeses and local venison through the islands and sample your wares in the house for dinner.
  • Look out for the Northern Lights, aurora borealis, step outside on a crisp, clear night and take in the vast dark sky lit up with stars and a clear Milky Way!
  • We provide guests with our own insiders' track to the islands to help you plan your holiday.
  • Though in a quiet, edge of village location with beach views, we are still accessible by the local bus, handy for an evening out. EV charger at the house for guests with electric cars.

Guest feedback
"A cosy paradise and excellent base for exploring both Lewis and Harris. The greatest characteristic of our stay was the attention to detail provided by Linda. Her desire to make everything perfect was palpable from the pre arrival care through to the welcome bag. The Longhouse itself works hard to make the dramatic skies and ferocity of the weather a brilliant extension of the experience. I've rarely felt more delightfully snug as when the wind blasted the landscape outside. Do make time to meet Linda 2 from the Hebridean Soap Company and take binoculars for seal spotting. Completely magical."
