The Experience

A wonderful place for a quiet getaway in beautiful surroundings. The interiors are an eclectic mix of old and new with exposed stone walls, muted colours, rich fabrics and plenty of comfy seating from which you can admire a colourful painting by Rosemary Beaton. There are heaps of books and games for rainy days, a merry wood-burner and binoculars – on a clear day you can see Harris and Lewis.

The kitchen will be a delight to work in, there’s more kit than you could shake a stick at and space for helpers at the table. On clement days take it all outdoors, or have a barbecue – when the sun goes down marvel at a myriad of stars. Sleep deeply on plump beds with feather duvets, soft Scottish blankets, more views and deep peace.

Walk for miles in any direction, find a pebble beach below you and a sandy one a short drive, take a boat trip to spot minke whales, dolphins and seals, immerse yourself in nature, restore your soul.

Reviews

A gorgeous place to come if you like walking, wildlife, the sea and being surrounded by nature, but don't want to skimp on comfort when you get home. This is the sort of place you will want to stay if you need rest and recuperation – a sort of sling for the soul.

Location

The neighbourhood

You'll find a map of suggested walks and there are many of them. You overlook the Black Mountains for climbs and far-reaching views from the summits. Walk to three local pubs, or The Bull's Head at Crasswall is 20 minutes away and serves good food; The Walnut Inn and The Hardwick are both Michelin starred and a 20-minute drive. Rowlestone Court Ice Cream and Ty Gwyn Cider Tasting are a 15-min drive.

Local points of interest from James Mitchell

  • Skye's only Michelin-starred restaurant, Loch Bay, and the island's oldest pub, The Stein Inn, are only a 10 minute drive away!
  • Mint Croft is located in the remote crofting village of Geary and many of our neighbours sell wonderful homemade goodies from small "honesty boxes" along the road, including freshly laid hen or duck eggs, award-winning Scottish tablet and home-baked cakes.
  • Using the binoculars available in the cottage, you can often spot dolphin, minke while, sea eagles and even, on occasion, killer whales in Loch Snizort.
  • The local area is famous for its Bortle grade-2 night sky, where the Aurora Borealis, the Milky Way, and noctilucent clouds frequently put on a stunning display.
  • Take a day trip to explore the rest of Skye, from the bloody clan stories richly told at nearby Dunvegan Castle to the Jurassic coastline of Trotternish which is peppered with dramatic scenery such as the Old Man of Storr, the Quirang and the Fairy Glen.
  • From the doorstop, many walks of all lengths and levels of difficulty can be found. Take a gentle stroll down to the beach at Gillen or head out on an adventurous hike around Waternish Point.
