The Experience

This architect-designed house wouldn’t look out of place on Grand Designs. The sleek, minimalist feel lets the outside do all the talking: to one side is the sea (the Inner Sound) and to the other the Quiraing, a mountainous landslip – it’s a two mile, moderate hike to the peak and the reward is incredible views.

Enjoy upside down living: a large, open-plan living/dining/kitchen upstairs and two crisp double bedrooms down. Every room lets you drink in the views. Contact the local fisherman for a fresh catch and cook up a storm in the neat kitchen, throw a log on the fire, get out games or books if the weather is wild; if not there’s a firepit outside for late night stargazing. Every detail is meticulous: a discreet TV, Sonos speakers, Nespresso machine, linen bedding.

Get lost in the magic of Skye: walk, bike, kayak, wild swim if you dare. Stroll across fields to the Skye restaurant at the Flodigarry Hotel for a slap up meal.

Location

The neighbourhood

This is rural Skye but there are other houses dotted around. There are good shops for groceries within a 5-10 minute drive and you'll be left the details of the local fisherman if you'd like to buy fresh fish. IPA lovers check out the Isle of Skye Brewery. Revel in all the wild scenery: Quiraing, Old Man of Storr, Fairy Glen.

Local points of interest from the Owners

  • There are a number of great walks to try here – such as down to the beaches, some famous for fossil hunting, others such as Staffin Bay ideal for families, paddle boarding and swimming. Head off on the Rubha Hunish walk to spot seabirds and marine mammals.
  • Skye Ghilie offers excellent guides for fishing stalking, wild walks, foraging and family adventures. Try Skye Scenic Tours to make the most of exploring the island or hire bikes and e-bikes and set off on your own tours.
  • The Quiraing walk is an essential for any photographer as it passes though some of the most spectacular landscapes in Scotland. It covers 6.8km (about 2 hours long). Head to Kilt Rock for spotting dolphins and seals in the right season.
  • For whisky lovers – head to Talisker Distilery in Carbost, the oldest working distillery on Skye. It’s set on the shores of Loch Harport with dramatic views over the Cuillins. Afterwards, dine at the Taigh Ailean Hotel in Portnalong or the Old Inn.
  • For more foodie options, we also love Three Chimmneys in Colbost, Loch Bay Restaurant in Stein, Kinloch Lodge in Sleat or Edibane Lodge, and our favourite is Ferry Inn in Uig – book ahead!
  • Pre-order and collect fresh seafood in Staffin – lobsters, langoustines, brown crabs and scallops – just ask for contact details!
