The Experience

Your converted barn is one of four self-catering properties set around a courtyard. Susan and her family live in the farmhouse and will greet you with freshly made scones along with fresh milk, tea and coffee; logs for the wood-burner are on the house.

Spread out in the spacious living room where you’ll find games and books for days when the weather plays up. You can all eat at the farmhouse table in the kitchen or, in summer, light the barbecue in your private garden, which has magnificent views of the Pentland Hills.

Walk along the ridge to the Flotterstone Inn in an hour-and-a-half or drive in ten minutes. The nearest town, Penicuik, has shops and restaurants, and you can take the bus to Edinburgh from here – or drive to the City Bypass in ten minutes.

Byre Cottage is in a wonderful location, surrounded by hills with fantastic walks from the door and yet it is easy to be in central Edinburgh within 15 minutes. The cottage is extremely well-equipped and generously set up. It is beautifully furnished and welcoming. It was pleasure to get away for a few days in this tricky year and to feel so comfortable thanks to the care taken by Susan and Jenny.

Katy, Cambridge

Felt like a home away from home as Byre cottage was so welcoming and warm. Had everything we could have wished for and more. Felt like the perfect escape nestled amongst the hills despite actually being quite close to Edinburgh. Loved being able to step out the door and head for the hills, bliss!

Iona, Edinburgh

Fantastic stay at Eastside Cottages! The cottage was in pristine condition and extremely well equipped, especially in the kitchen. We celebrated New Year whilst there and the weather was pretty good for some stunning walks in the Pentland Hills. The setting was great too - a real escape to the countryside but still close enough to get into Edinburgh easily (we hired a car to make that easily feasible). Lovely hosts too! If going back to Edinburgh I would definitely choose to come back to Eastside! :)

Jo, Rochester

A beautiful cottage in an equally lovely setting.A lot of attention to detail has gone into maximising the guest experience.Perfect!

Anne, Glasgow

Perfect place, perfect location : all you can wish for!

Karel, Sint-Niklaas (Belgium)

Eastside was a lovely place to spend a quiet few days walking, cooking and relaxing by the wood burner. The cottage is done up beautifully and very well equipped. The owners were very friendly and helpful with advice on walks and other local info. It was great being surrounded not just by hills but also sheep, and dogs and horses.

Amy, London

As always our stay at Eastside was fabulous. The cottage is cosy and warm and the welcoming tea tray with home made scones is delicious. The location in the Pentland Hills invites you for a refreshing walk right from your doorstep. Also the center of Edinburgh is just half an hour by car. The Cowans are very welcoming and helpful.

The neighbourhood

Eastside Cottages are set in a quiet glen in Pentland Hills Regional Park, surrounded by hills sporting purple heather – look out for red grouse, peregrines, ravens and badgers. You can strike out for hikes into the hills from the house – take a picnic.

Local points of interest from Susan Cowan

  • The cottage is nestled among acres of stunning countryside crisscrossed with walking trails from the doorstep. Take a picnic into the hills, hike to the local pub or just take a moment to watch the wildlife and the world go by from the nearest hilltop.
  • The cottage is at the centre of Eastside Farm - our working hill sheep farm. Old-fashioned grasses, herbs & heather illustrate the timeless values of our traditional farming systems. Red grouse, peregrines, ravens, wild hares & badgers are a common sight
  • Edinburgh, Scotland's compact, hilly capital city is jam-packed with great things to do and it's only a 10 mile drive from Eastside to the centre! Explore the cobbled streets of George St., Victoria St., Stockbridge, the West End and the Royal Mile.
  • The Lothians and beyond have so much to offer. From country spas, sandy beaches and surfing, to distilleries, skiing and sculpture parks. There’s lots to keep the whole family entertained without heading into the city.

Susan Cowan

The Cowans are the fifth generation of the family to run Eastside farm. Susan was a pharmacist and is now a keen gardener and farmer alongside her husband, a full-time farmer and avid bread and marmalade maker. Their daughter Jenny assists in the day to day running of the cottages and is responsible for the tasteful interior design.
