The Experience

Come for thousands of hectares of beautiful countryside in this Regional Park, with challenging hills and gentle walks around reservoirs. Cyclists and hikers will find over a hundred kilometres of marked paths. It all feels remote, surrounded by hills and many sheep, but Edinburgh is only 30 minutes in the car.

Your local stone cottage has a contemporary feel indoors, with neutral colours, wooden floors, warm throws and deep window sills. Views soar over to the south side of the hills, the wood-burner is merry on a dull day (logs provided) and the living room is spacious. Gather in the kitchen for suppers or fire up the barbecue on the terrace; toast a marshmallow around the fire pit later on.

Sunny bedrooms have pure wool throws, thick mattresses and views over the garden to the heather-covered hills. You’ll wake up filled with joy just looking at them.

Reviews

What a great find the Sheepcote and the Coachhouse are. We have just returned for a second time , on this occasion in the Sheepcote. Both cottages have a lovely fresh homely atmosphere and are warm ,comfy and cosy. We had some beautiful autumnal walks in the Pentland hills behind, especially around the North Esk Reservoir/lake with the burn flowing from it. The near proximity to great golf courses and Edinburgh is a bonus from such a peaceful retreat. We are already planning another stay.

We had a wonderful stay. Seriously looking forward to coming back again. Stylish and comfortable, we had a lovely time.

Sarah, London

A wonderful stay at the Sheep Cote. The cottage was so well set up, everything we needed and such a homely feel. Great location for exploring the hills and we also enjoyed being able to get into Edinburgh so easily. We’d love to come back, thank you.

Sarah, London

Take in deep gulps of fresh National Park air and relish the views, the peace and quiet and many sheep.

Location

The neighbourhood

The nearest village is West Linton (4.3 miles) which has a deli, post office and bookshop as well as The Old Bakehouse restaurant. Whitmuir Organics (6 miles) sells great meat, fruit and veg and can also deliver home cooked food ahead of your stay. Explore the Secret Herb Garden (8 miles) and buy delicious gins from their distillery, or simply wander the beautiful gardens.

Local points of interest from Ali & Andrew Kennedy

  • North Esk Reservoir is on our land and a short walk from the cottage, it is absolutely beautiful and the perfect spot for a wee dram, or maybe just a flask of tea...
  • Edinburgh city is only 16 miles away, so its very easy to do a day trip or two - perhaps walk up Arthurs Seat or just head to the shops. There are plenty of delicious restaurants there to test out too.
  • No need to get in the car to explore the hills, the path is right on your doorstep. There are plenty of other sporting activities within reach too: mountain biking on the hills, dry slope skiing, golf, horse riding, surfing or fishing on the River Tweed.
  • Nearby Rosslyn Chapel is an intriguing and magical chapel which is only 15 minutes away and features in the Da Vinci Code book by Dan Brown - its absolutely stunning in real life and worth a visit during your stay.
  • Guests are welcome to explore the private walled gardens of neighbouring Newhall Estate which is just across the road - there is beautiful sheltered glen walk to do there too.
  • Dine in with COOK meals delivery to your door, or sample the local menus of Penicuik & West Linton restaurants. The options in Edinburgh are endless too!
