The Experience

An 1700’s gothic gem of a lodge at the gateway to a vast slice of Scottish Highland heaven. The Monzie estate, its sheep, cattle and wildlife – including hares and red squirrels – is flourishing in the charming Crichton’s care, and yours to explore. Alexandra managed every detail of the renovation of their East Gate Lodge. David’s ‘Monzie Joinery’ cabinetmakers are responsible for all the handsome woodwork. The result is a very liveable space: light and warm, with an octagonal sitting room, a behemoth of a cast-iron bath and star-gazy bedrooms. Take a break from cooking in the compact, well-designed kitchen and have good things to eat, like venison casserole or afternoon tea, brought to your door. You may tour the fascinating castle – rebuilt to Robert Lorimer’s design after a fire in 1908. Hill-walkers and golfers, fisher people and whisky tasters will need at least a week to make a dent. It’s four miles to Crieff; the perfect peace here a balm after a summer’s day at the Highland Games. In Autumn the tree-lined approach is gold and scarlet; the long view, past standing stones to heather-clad hills, serious bliss.

Reviews

We just spent a wonderful weekend in the Gatehouse at Monzie Estate. Our stay was amazing from start to finish, we had a very warm welcome from Alexandra (I’d go back for the brownies alone!). The accommodation was cosy and the added comforts of blankets, hot water bottles and comfy bed (amazing!) made the stay extra special. In fact it’s all the little extras and details that make you feel like you’re home away from home, I wish I could have stayed longer! Thank you Alexandra for making us feel so welcome. We’ll be back soon!

A stunning little hideaway, with masses to explore locally, and surprisingly accessible from the south. Extremely cosy, very stylishly renovated (those fabrics!) and generously kitted out. Alexandra was a very welcoming host. We’ll be back!

What a stunning place! It was a perfect getaway for two couples. Everything met expectation and beyond. The lodge is a quirky building with so much character but surprisingly spacious! Plenty of games were provided as was everything you need to make a home cooked meal from the local ingredients. Lovely little restaurants, pubs and delis in Crieff are barely a 5 min drive away. It was quiet but not isolated, scenic even in rain and sleet, and well worth a visit. Hosts are so helpful and always on hand, even meeting us in the dark after our long train delay. We will definitely be returning.

This miniature castle is isolated, with not another building in sight. The Lodge doesn't look that big, but as you enter, you realise that it is more spacious than suggested by the photographs! The two bedrooms have plenty of space, thick walls and the beds are unbelievably cosy. We loved the old bath which apparently came from the nearby castle and were pleasantly surprised to find underfloor heating. All very modern as it has been fully refurburbished. The owners provided everything imaginable.

Local points of interest from Alexandra Crichton

  • Stay on a 4,000 acre estate and have access to it all. Waterfalls, woodland, loch, moorland and plenty of unique artefacts including a stone circle, a standing stone and historic follies.
  • David or I give all our guests (subject to our availability) a private tour of Monzie Castle. The castle dates back to 1634 and was restored in 1908 by Sir Robert Lorimer.
  • Monzie is filled with wildlife and you will see hares, red squirrels, birds of prey, owls and an abundance of wild birds.
  • Crieff is less than four miles away and is home to some fabulous independent shops, cafes and restaurants. We would be delighted to recommend our favourites! Six miles away is Comrie Croft Farm Shop and Tomna'ha market garden.
  • Drive up into the highlands, only a few miles from the cottage for the most scenic drive in Perthshire. We love to visit the Birnam Reader, a second-hand bookshop in Birnam, near Dunkeld. They open Thursday to Sunday and serve wonderful cakes too!
