The Experience

Close the shutters, light the stove, settle in for the night. There’s a plinth-mounted tub with long views of hills and mountains. The conversion from laundry to love nest has been kind: original wood floors and sizeable windows, with generous proportions for longer stays. It’s all on one level, with a big four-poster in the studio room, a kitchen stocked with stuff and plenty of space to entertain.

Bring waterproofs to tramp the trails around Dunalastair Water, rods to catch elusive yellow-bellied trout, binoculars for spotting red squirrels, pine martens and ospreys. The big ‘hoose’ now lies in ruins and has an eerie beauty to inspire writers, photographers, painters.

There’s a raft of things to do for active types: wild swimming on the loch, dog walks in all directions – up Munros, down dells – tennis on the estate. Pitlochry is close for culture, the ‘Harrods of the North’ at Bruar 20 minutes’ drive away. Or sit in the garden, relax, and read a book with a view.

Reviews

The Old Laundry provides an elegant highland getaway which will wash away life's stresses and strains and is an impressive base from which to explore the great and beautiful outdoors.

Pamela, Sawday's inspector

This cottage ticked all the boxes on the wish list. Off the beaten track. Able to walk our dogs from the door. Wonderful wildlife to watch especially the red squirrels. Comfortable and cosy warm. Very comfortable bed. View from all the windows was just stunning. No wonder so many people return. We will definitely be back. Lovely welcome, and great people to deal with. The surrounding area is beautiful and interesting and provided us with more than we could fit into a week. Great places to eat near by. The Old Laundry is a very special place.

Location

The neighbourhood

One of several cottages on the vast, 17,000-acre Dunalastair Estate, The Old Laundry hunkers in a wooded glen at the end of a private lane, away from the other houses of the working farm. It’s remote, but a spectacularly scenic drive delivers you to Pitlochry in 40 minutes. Closer is the pretty village of Kinloch Rannoch, about three miles away, which has shops, restaurants and a café for cakes and lunches, plus the Shed Gallery which showcases local landscape photography. Hire bikes (or bring your own) to cycle the Black Wood of Rannoch trail (10 minutes), take a boat ride, or bag a Munro with a hike up and over Shiehallion, the ‘fairy mountain’.

Local points of interest from Rose La Terriere

Introducing

Rose La Terriere

Originally the seat of the Roberston clan, Dunalastair Estate has been in the La Terriere family since 1891 and holiday cottages on the estate have been rented out successfully since the 70s. Generations of families have been coming here for years - returning grandchildren of our original visitors with their children. There's a full team to keep the estate running smoothly, including a farm manager, shepherd, gamekeeper and wildlife manager, maintenance team and Beatrice, who looks after the holiday cottages. A member of the team will pop in on the first evening to make sure everything's ok.
