The Experience

Jilly and Manjit have created a warm, deeply comfortable space that makes you feel at home as soon as you walk in. The Ghillie is all yours – a retreat for two or bring a couple of friends or family – and you’re free to wander the surrounding three and a half acres of grounds. Settle down with a tray laden with tea and one of Jilly’s delicious cakes – inside or out on a hedged terrace.

Walk down to the main house, which dates from 1720, to have breakfast in the Regency dining room. Start with creamy Aberfeldy whisky porridge, follow with a host of delicious local options including smoked bacon from Selkirk, Juicy Jones sausages, Teviot Smokery salmon, black pudding and haggis from Stornoway… Lighter choices might include berries with yogurt, croissants and pastries, granola or muesli and toast with whisky marmalade.

Come in June for The Borders Book Festival, four days of events for all ages; visit Main Street Trading in St Boswell – a fun combo of bookshop/cafe/deli/lifestyle shop; while back home, the sitting room has all you need for a stormy afternoon or snoozy evening: books, coffee, tea, fruit and homemade shortbread.

The Ghillie is all we could wish for to restore us on our trip through the UK in July 2022: well located on lovely grounds, beautifully furnished, spacious, spotless clean, comfortable (cozy sitting room, good beds) and absolutely quiet. On top of that, the hosts (Jilly and Manjit) are most charming and attentive. We had welcome drinks with snacks, lovely conversations and in the morning were served an exquisite breakfast in their beautiful dining room. We hope to return soon!

The Ghillie is such a fabulous place to stay with incredible attention to detail. We were looked after by the perfect hosts who think of everything and nothing is too much trouble. We enjoyed Jilly’s cooking and we were also fortunate to experience Manjit’s curry one evening. The setting is fabulous and we’d highly recommend a stay .... you’ll just want to stay longer!

John & Sharron, Glasgow

We enjoyed a two night stay at The Ghillie the day restrictions were lifted. The attention to detail in the property is excellent and the little extras like afternoon tea on arrival are lovely touches. We ate there both nights and thoroughly enjoyed the meals. There is plenty to see locally and I imagine it is a lovely place to stay regardless of season. I would definitely recommend.

Chloe, Ayrshire

The Ghillie is the most fabulous place to stay, Jilly & Manjit made us so very welcome. The accommodation is pristine and has everything and more to make your stay comfortable and luxurious, fluffy bathrobes and herbal teas, to name but a few! The food was excellent like being in a 5* hotel I can’t wait to visit again

Charlie, Chichester

We had a wonderful stay and it is one of the best b&bs I’ve ever stayed in. The rooms are beautifully decorated and it’s in such a peaceful setting. Jilly is also a great cook so we ate very well for couple of days! The family are also very warming and accommodating. We will definitely come back.

Gemma, London

Absolutely amazing everything was immaculate but very homely will definitely be back for a visit. Perfect location for visiting Melrose and surrounding towns

Myself and my now fiancee had an amazing experience at the Ghillie! Jilly made our stay so special ❤️ In the days prior to our arrival, Jilly kindly helped my now fiancee plan his proposal to me at this beautiful place. We had a whole suit to ourselves which was perfectly decorated, we were brought tea, home made cake and shortbread. Whilst we were out for dinner, on a cold dark October night Jilly prepared a pathway of candle lit lanterns through the woodland on the grounds, with flowers for my fiancee to propose to me at. Such a special surprise❤️ Gorgeous place and gorgeous hosts❤

Julie, Gorebridge

The Ghillie is a beautiful B&B with everything you could want in a most stunning area - warm, welcoming and totally relaxing. Delicious breakfast cooked by Jilly, who is the perfect hostess and makes extremely good cake and shortbread!

Mary, Sawday's inspector

Luxurious accommodation, beautifully decorated throughout, including a fully furnished sitting room with comfy sofas, large TV and cosy lamps; a lovely place to relax after a day spent visiting the many local attractions. The stylish themed bedrooms have enormous beds with extremely comfortable mattresses and silky soft sheets. Attention to detail is evident from the quality of bed linen, fluffy towels, bathrobes and high end toiletries, to the coffee and tea making facilities and the contents of the hospitality tray. Delicious breakfast using fine locally sourced produce. Highly recommended.

Amanda, Retford

Claire, Edinburgh

The neighbourhood

The Ghilliie is down a private drive, next to Prieston House and fields of cattle and sheep. The surrounding countryside is the stunning rolling Scottish Borders and you overlook the Eildon Hills; on a clear day the Cheviot Hills can be spotted to the south. The nearest restaurants and shops are about five minutes away by car in Melrose, St Boswells or Selkirk.

Local points of interest from Jilly Bhamra

  • Gaze at, photograph or even walk the Eildons. Only a couple of miles away, they offer some of the best views in the Borders, one of which is from our rear paddock. St Cuthberts way cuts directly though the Eildons. Liquid refreshments on the way.
  • Hear the resident woodpecker hammering out his latest tunes on our massive Scots Pine in the adjoining paddocks, stroke the ponies, and with sheep and cows in the fields its just nature's choir that breaks the silence on offer here.
  • Meander around the mature gardens pheasant spotting. Take a ride in our wooden swing, made for little ones but loved by adults. It's horsey country here so the equestrians are catered for with lots of bridleways, riding can be easily arranged locally.
  • The Mighty River Tweed is only 2 miles away, offering some of the best salmon fishing in Scotland. For the crack shot we have Bisley at Braidwood as neighbours, with one of the biggest & best clay pigeon shoots in Europe. Remember to pack the plus 4s
  • For the food lover there are very accomplished restaurants around Melrose, Kelso & Jedburgh. Award winning Provender, afternoon tea at Floors Castle tearooms or for an intimate dinner the Hoebridge at Gattonside. The Capon Tree at Jedburgh is a must.
  • Tick off the 4 abbeys of Melrose, Dryburgh, Jedburgh & Kelso, and for the cultured we have some of the very finest grand houses and castles in Scotland on our doorstep. For the dreamy romantics stop off at Walter Scotts posh pad at Abbotsford.

Jilly Bhamra

Jilly and her husband Manjit were chasing a dream to live in Scotland, and after a two-year search they chose the Scottish Border town of Melrose. As frequent B&B users they always wanted to host something special for guests and as their careers were in the NHS, caring for people comes as second nature. They wanted to create somewhere with a dash of luxury, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life - The Ghillie is the perfect place for being spoilt, especially for homemade cake lovers! Jilly and Manjit both have a penchant for Pre-Raphaelite art and William Morris fabrics; they designed The Ghillie around these interests taking inspiration from nature literally on their doorstep.
