There’s a ski chalet feel to this gorgeous, light-filled and beamed space with high ceilings and underfloor heating: leave your outdoor kit in the handy boot room after a day out walking, cycling or simply exploring this very rural backwater – you could walk all day and not come across another soul. The sitting room has plenty of squashy seating, an open fire and interesting books so you’ll feel serene in here, even if the weather isn’t.
Children will gravitate to the see-saw by the gravelled outdoor eating area or head for swings and lots of den-making in the woods; you can unwind and light the barbecue and firepit, perhaps with an evening drink, knowing they are quite safe with no roads around. You’ll find basics for cooking in the fabulous, sociable kitchen (Lulu was a cook) plus a home-baked lemon drizzle cake, homemade jam and fresh herbs from the garden.
Selkirk is a ten-minute drive for stocking up.
