The Experience

Reached down a mile-long bumpy track from the main road, this shed once housed the heating for greenhouses on Cowdenknowes Estate and was rescued from ruin by Luke and Kate. It’s separated from their garden by a wildflower meadow and feels utterly peaceful and remote.

Find a generous basket of home-baked bread, jam, granola and eggs from the hens when available. It’s cosy next to the wood burner with board games or a book, or you can sit out on your deck overlooking the River Leader – have a barbecue in the enclosed garden or stroll 20 minutes through woods to Earlston for cafes and pubs.

It’s paradise here for outdoor lovers: walking and cycling routes leave from your door, horse-riding stables are a ten-minute walk away and you can fish on the River Tweed. Explore the great houses, abbeys and castles of the Scottish Borders; the coast and Edinburgh are about an hour’s drive away.

Advice on the many walks surrounding The Potting Shed.

Max. 2 dogs.

Surrounded by woodland walks and a river at the bottom of the garden to jump into. Dog heaven, just please don't eat the free-range chickens!

Reviews

We have a great few days staying in the Potting Shed which is perfect for an out of city break. A great location, well turned out and very comfortable. We hope to be back.

Absolutely beautiful place to stay! The Potting Shed is a gorgeous little place to stay! Absolutely perfect for a relaxing holiday! Walks straight from the accommodation through the woods and along the river! Easy access to Edinburgh and the coast too! When I’m back in the Scottish Borders I’ll certainly stay here again! Thank you! The ginger marmalade by the way was delicious!

Welcoming, warm, cosy, totally peaceful, and owners who care about their guests and provide a wonderful welcome . The perfect place to 'get away from it all' - I would like to book The Potting Shed for a couple of days myself!

The Potting Shed was a magical retreat for two of us and our dog. It had recently snowed and this made the experience all the more memorable as we were met at the top of the track by Kate, who helped us get our luggage to the Potting Shed. The Potting Shed is very cosy and a perfect spot for a relaxing break. We were made to feel very welcome with delicious homemade granola, jam and eggs from the chickens. The nearby walks were amazing with rolling hills, river and forest views. We were lucky enough to see an otter on one walk, which made our trip. We will be back!

Just want to send a quick note to say thank you so much for such a lovely stay. We love the potting shed & surroundings - even better than we imagined. You made us feel very welcome with the eggs, granola and bread (and wheelbarrow : ) )- which were all delicious. The potting shed is just perfect and so cosy with the log burner. I think the snow made our stay magical and it felt like we were walking into Narnia on our walk yesterday.

Let me see....should I write about the beautiful location? River side, tucked away, hens walking by as you enjoy a coffee to the sound of the wind through the trees and birdsong? Or maybe I should comment on the potting shed itself? Immaculate, cosy, bed sheets to die for, fire, decor that makes you feel like you've come home? No. None of that. I think the most important thing to point out is that The Potting Shed has a presence. A soul. If it was a person, The Potting Shed would rub your shoulders, after passing you a glass of wine, whilst dinner is simmering. Stress melting bliss.

Just perfect for what I wanted- warm, quiet and cosy for a Christmas "retreat" with myself and dog. Owner was so thoughtful and generous and the place has a lovely atmosphere which instantly made me feel relaxed. It's perfect as a place to stay on ones own- which is pretty unusual. Best footpaths ever!!

Clare, Edinburgh

Sometimes places speak of being the ultimate in relaxation, but I can honestly say that the Potting Shed is worthy of this accolade. It is set far from the madding crowd within a walled garden with 3 adorable mad hens running riot and the River Leaderwater gurgling in the background. Inside, the property was furnished to an excellent standard with a lovely comfy bed. We slept better than we had for agess. There is easy access to Edinburgh, Melrose and numerous local walks from the doorstop, including the stomp to the summit of Black Hill, with stunning views for miles. It was perfect!

Mark

Beautiful location and a very comfortable and cozy place to stay. The owners have turned this former derelict outbuilding into fantastic accommodation. Tastefully decorated and very high quality furnishings including the comfiest bed and thickest towels ever! Welcome hamper is a lovely touch and was much appreciated after all the lovely walking and cycling in the area. Will definitely return.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are a host of walks from the door – climb to the top of the Black Hill for wonderful views, wander through the woods to Earlston to get the morning papers. If you're feeling energetic you can walk along the river to Melrose in about 1.5 hours for more restaurants and pubs.

Local points of interest from Kate Comins

  • Enjoy stunning riverside or hill walks from the door. Why not walk to Melrose for a pub lunch and catch the bus back?
  • Fish the world famous River Tweed right on your door step. The owner is a fishing nut and is happy to advise on the best beats, just ask.
  • Go horse riding at the local stables a 10 minute walk away.
  • The cosmopolitan delights of Edinburgh are only an hour away, why not enjoy the new Borders Railway a beautiful train ride delivering you to the heart of Edinburgh
  • Historical houses, abbeys, castles and an award winning bookshop and café are all within a 20 minute drive.
  • The beautiful coast is just under an hour away. Check out the surf at the beautiful Coldingham Bay and enjoy a short walk to the harbour at St Abbs where you can treat yourself to a crab sandwich

Introducing

Kate Comins

Kate and Luke are both passionate about the environment; Luke is a keen fisherman and Kate enjoys walking and running in the fantastic countryside. They are foodies and enjoy growing their own ingredients in the vegetable patch and eating out in the wonderful pubs, restaurants and cafes in the Borders. They love sharing this special spot and hope the Potting Shed provides guests with space and time to stop, relax, unwind and take stock.
