Lose yourself happily in this stunning historic building with thousands of books, local food, peaceful rooms with radios, friendly staff

Read guest comments

If this glorious, unusual, historic and stunning place fails you as a retreat, then look deep within yourself. You have 250,000 books, silence, space, convivial company if you need it, Theatre Clwyd and Chester but 15 minutes away. Eucharist is held every weekday, delicious local food is there for you in the bistro, an open fire and sofas in the Gladstone room. The staff are lovely, the mood sheer old-fashioned decency. It is a Roberts radio, rather than TV, place. Bedrooms are warm, simple and unpretentious. Come for as long as you need to recover from this mad world. It will, for all adults, feel like a privilege.

Local points of interest from
Gladstone’s Library:

  • Named as Wales’ ‘Most Special Historic Building’ and topping the Guardian’s poll of world-wide ‘well being’ retreats (alongside locations in Mexico and Cambodia) Gladstone’s Library can only be described as truly unique.
  • Located in Hawarden, a charming Welsh village with an eclectic range of shops including a Post Office and general store, hairdressers, chemist, two pubs and the award-winning Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, owned by William Gladstone's great-great grandson.
  • Permits are available for Library guests to enjoy walks in the picturesque countryside of the privately owned Hawarden Estate with its disused corn mill and ruined 'old' Hawarden Castle (13th Century).
  • The 'new' Hawarden Castle, former home of William Gladstone, is still occupied by the Gladstone family today.
  • Gladstone’s Library is located in a prime spot, just eight miles from the famous ‘walled city’ of Chester and a short drive from the rolling Welsh hills.
  • Outside of the village there are many interesting places to visit including the historic market town of Mold, St Winefride’s Well (Holywell),the coastal town of Llandudno and Snowdonia (about an hour and a half’s drive). Tourist brochures are available.
