The
Experience
This is a kindly place, in the family for 200 years; Clare and Sam introduce you, brilliantly, to the delights of rural life – or leave you to do your own thing. Two of the holiday cottages are in the old stable-yard, simple and attractive, divided by a flower-filled courtyard and next to the produce shop. Interiors are warm: curtains are made of Welsh blankets – family antiques, fresh flowers and pictures will make you feel at home. The third space is more contemporary, private and will suit romantic couples – although there’s an outside bell tent or indoor loft den for smaller adventurers. You can roam the gardens and the 80-acre estate (perfect for dogs), send your children to Forest School (check the website for dates), row on the lake (little life jackets provided) and order home cooked food to be waiting for you. There is a ‘gentle’ emphasis on sustainability, with sausages from their own pigs, honey from their bees, apple juice from their apples and seasonal produce from the bountiful kitchen garden. If gardening is your thing you can volunteer here too. Utterly special.

Old-Lands is a magical place to stay. Even when it is raining. Sam showed us the moths he had trapped at night, was very helpful and recommended great places to visit nearby. Autumn had just started and the trees and gardens were just beautiful. Apples galore and the colourful honesty shop was full of wonderful produce from the walled garden and orchard. There are some lovely walks in the area. We will definitely come back for another visit. Thank you for having us.

Old Lands is a very special place. This is our second stay, and we will continue to visit in the years to come. The cottages are lovely, comfortable, very clean and well maintained. The owners are extremely approachable and friendly, and happy to help in any way they can. The setting is idyllic with so much on your doorstep. A wonderful place to stay!

We have just returned from a magical week at Old Lands. We were lucky with the weather, so took full advantage of all the estate has to offer, the nature walk, forest school......Our two boys made friends with the neighbouring children too, so were literally free range at times & we felt happy that they were safe. There were tears when we left. For me, it was all about the little shop. I loved having such fresh vegetables on hand & with the glut of late summer managed to cook delicious meals every evening using almost exclusively Old Lands produce. Very special.

We had an amazing time at Old Lands. The estate is truly wonderful with the walled garden, the meadows, the lake, ... and the cottages (we stayed at Horseshoes) are very charming and attractively furnished. With the friendliness of the owners and the little shop next door, our family of five couldn't spend a more enjoying time.

Old Lands is a rare treasure. It is not often that one's expectations of a destination are exceeded. It is a place to have adventures, get inspired and relax. We made friends, learned about nature, fell in love with Wales and soaked up some of Sam's passion for the wildlife in this area. The Forest School run by Gill was a highlight of our daughter's week (aged 7) while the cottage was beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, catering for all our needs. Sheer luxury! Thank you Sam and Clare.

I can only echo the previous glowing reviews for this lovely, friendly place. Despite the typical wet spring weather, we and our 6 year old had a fabulous week in Stable Court. Highlights of the stay included an Easter egg hunt in the beautiful grounds organised by Clare and Sam, Forest School adventures with Catherine, a nature walk with Sam, whose knowledge and enthusiasm for his subject is infectious, visiting the chickens and making friends with the friendly cat. It was a much appreciated taste of rural life for us and we were sorry to leave - we hope to come back again soon.

We loved our stay at Old Lands. Horseshoes is a fantastic cottage for all the family, but all three cottages here have intriguing characters of their own and we really want to come back and try out the other two soon. Everyone was really friendly and we loved exploring the old estate and buying treats from the produce shop.

Wow, what can I say other than we actually want to come and live here! Utterly wonderful stay in beautiful surroundings. Stable Court was just the right mix of old and new - incredibly comfortable beds that you don’t want to get out of, beautiful linen and towels and a kitchen and bathroom perfectly fitted out for a short or long stay. What a wonderfully vintage feel the place has reflecting the go slow nature of the whole estate. The honesty shop had delicious seasonal homegrown vegetables, eggs and meat and a smattering of fabulous vintage dresses and pretty china... just fabulous!

Stable Court is beautifully maintained to give the best of vintage old with a few modern luxuries. Beds were soft, the achingly vast space we had was warm, the kitchen was thoughtfully stocked. Eco friendly cleaning products meant staying away with a particular allergy was, for the first time ever, not an issue. The hosts were reassuringly available if wanted but we had so much space and privacy even with other families staying on site we felt that the whole estate could nearly have been just ours. Beautiful surroundings and great for kids to explore. Honestly can barely wait to stay again.

A beautiful place to stay, relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. We loved exploring the walled garden, rowing on the sunny lake and watching kingfishers on the water. The wood barn accommodation is extremely comfortable and thoughtfully equipped with cosy Welsh blankets and flowers picked from the garden. Clare was very welcoming and we enjoyed the whole atmosphere of the estate including the farm shop and friendly cat. Perfect for a relaxing break or exploring the countryside further afield. We look forward to returning and buying more Dingstow honey!

I visited Old Lands with my partner and three year old daughter. Such a peaceful & relaxing place. Clare offered a lovely welcome, we had a brilliant nature walk with Sam (newts, toads, moths), admired Collums delicate & beautiful work in the walled garden and our daughter loved the forest school with Catherine & Iris. We headed to lake every morning to row on the boats, played long games of hide & seek on the grounds, bought & cooked vegetables from the on-site shop that were picked fresh from the allotment. We also visited Abergavenny for couple hours which is a lovely little town.

We had a fantastic weeks stay in the woodbarn. A beautiful barn conversion with simple rustic decor - I loved the welsh blanket curtains and old doors turned into a table & bed head! A very comfy double bedroom & a mezzanine with beds for 2 children. Our boys (aged 7 & 10) also enjoyed sleeping in the teepee just outside the barn. We pre ordered delicious homemade dinners from local caterer PJs. Lots to do on the estate including a nature walk with Sam looking at moths & pond dipping; tennis spectacular view; boating on the lake. Trips out included castles, Forest of Dean, Monmouth. 10/10

We don't get out much, and we go away even less often, but we have just got back from a brilliant week at Old Lands, Dingestow in Monmouthshire. Its a wonderful place run by lovely people. The accommodation was great, loads to do nearby and the highlights included the pond-dipping and bug searches which Sam ran. We saw water scorpions and cannibalistic crested newts amongst other things! He has identified 900 species of flora and fauna living on the farm over the last 25 years--its a wildlife haven with everything from skipper butterflies to stoats, and Barn Owls. Fantastic family holiday!!!
