The Experience

This beautifully refurbished country-house hotel sits high on the hill with long views over Carmarthen Bay. Outside, there’s a small courtyard, then five acres of lawns and woodland, where bluebells run riot in spring. There’s an elegant bar in deep charcoal with fine art on the walls, then a big drawing room with an open fire and huge sea views.

Vast windows in the main house flood the rooms with light and frame the view, while doors in the sunroom open onto a gravelled terrace, where you can read the papers, dig into afternoon tea, or fall asleep in the sun. Bedrooms have a stunning new look: off-white walls, beautiful beds, crisp white linen, elegant fabrics, and sublime white marble bathrooms.

You eat in style in the restaurant, breakfast is a feast and the house menus change frequently with the seasons and what is available locally, and always artfully presented.

Reviews

We had such a great stay at Penally Abbey. The room was gorgeous and very comfortable, and the staff so friendly they put you at ease straight away. It has all the comfort and style of a super smart hotel but with none of the pomp or stuffiness which makes it a very relaxing place to be. Would go back in a heartbeat.

We had our small wedding here recently, and can heartily recommend Penally Abbey. The rooms are LOVELY, the food Excellent, and the staff wonderful. Great views, good golf course and beach walks on the doorstep. Couldn't wish for more. A truly memorable stay. Many Thanks

Mike, Midhurst

A great hotel in a wonderful location just outside Tenby with fantastic views over the dunes to the sea with Caldey Island beyond. Beautiful gardens, superb room and friendly staff. Almost faultless.

Thank you to Lucas, Melanie, Serana and the rest of the team for a wonderful stay - in spite of being there for just 24 hours, we felt revived when we left. The gardens are beautiful and great for relaxing in - we loved the tea and cake on arrival. Both dinner (scallops were amazing) and breakfast were delicious - a real treat. The whole hotel is gorgeous yet unpretentious. We hope to return for the log fires in the winter!

Sally, Bristol

Penally Abbey was undoubtedly the most beautiful accommodation on our wonderful round trip through Wales. The house, the garden, the food, the family atmosphere... magical! With such an inviting and stylish accommodation, bad weather doesn't matter at all. We enjoyed simply spending a rainy day in the hotel and being pampered by the friendly staff. Hopefully we'll be back soon!

Recommended by friend to stay here it’s amazing place totally awesome Been to Tenby before but this place is very special Staff were wonderful Made a fuss of my little pug dog even provides special bowel for him Food was great even kept kitchen open as I was late You see that the abbey is loved by owners and staff This is reflected in warm unpretentious atmosphere A great find I thanked my friend who is a hotelier in London Michael

Stayed here for one night last week on our way back to the ferry in Pembroke. Absolutely loved this hotel, though our stay was short it was very comfortable, we were in the coach house and the bed was super comfortable and the bath really long and great for a good soak. Dinner was delicious, breakfast let them down a little bit as I felt the granola/museli should have been homemade and maybe some nice breads instead of just toast or pastries as the bread at dinner was delicious, very small picky things but on the whole would highly recommend.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Abbey has lovely views across dunes to the sea. You can stroll to a beach in 10 minutes and then on to Tenby, a further 20 minutes or so. Tenby is a pretty cliffside harbour town with superb beaches, lots of independent shops and good places to eat. Further afield you have the whole of the Pembrokeshire National Park to explore, lily ponds at Bosherton and coastal walks galore.

Local points of interest from Melanie & Lucas Boissevain

  • Penally Abbey Hotel is a fascinating building full of history and beautiful architecture. The doorways and windows boast strawberry hill gothic design and the original fireplaces and high ceilings only add to the history that is prominent throughout.
  • Penally Abbey is located in the UKs only coastal national park which passes 58 beaches and 14 harbours. Many of the beaches have won worldwide awards for beauty and sea quality.
  • We are a family run hotel which means we aim to create a relaxed, informal atmosphere paired with professional, friendly staff. For us, it is the perfect combination for guests looking for understated luxury.
  • The hotel is situated on the hill in the picturesque village of Penally with views out across the sand dunes towards the Irish sea and Caldey island.
  • The beach is only a gentle 10 minute stroll through the sand dunes from the hotel. Guests can leave their car and wander to the sea shore for a paddle at any time of the day. The ultimate coastal escape.
  • We have two beautiful spaniels and love welcoming other dogs to stay in our beautiful corner of Wales. There is a vast number of dog friendly places and beaches in Pembrokeshire.
