The Experience

You can canoe on the Wye, fly-fish in the Brecon Beacons, stride over the Black Mountains – or stay put all day and never be bored. It is impossible to tire of the beauty of the setting, high in a 200-acre wood, surrounded by green fields. As for the cottage, 19th century, of slate and stone and reached via a long forestry track, it is simple, neat and cosy. A family of four or six, or close friends could happily hole up here – as long as you’re happy to foresake WiFi and mobile (there isn’t any!). Step inside to find warmth, wooden floors and pleasing cottage proportions. And the best of old and new: flagstones on the kitchen floor, downlighters in the ceiling. By the grate are logs from the estate (there’s a charge), a leather sofa to sink into, complimentary goodies in the kitchen, and two well-decorated bedrooms upstairs, carpeted and with rugs for comfort. Drive to the delicious River Café (three miles) and watch canoes bustle outside, or book in for supper at the owners’ own pub in Hay, the Three Tuns.
