The
Experience
A unique opportunity to stay in the oldest house in Wales – a fascinating, 1402 cruck-framed hall house, built for Henry IV as a hunting lodge. Informal Annie and John have filled it with a charming mix of Venetian mirrors, Indian rugs, pewter plates, rich fabrics and oak pieces. Dine by candlelight in the romantic dining room – all sorts of delicious dishes; tuck into a big breakfast in the sweet conservatory. Bedrooms are luxuriously comfortable with embroidered linen, quirky lamps, nifty bathrooms. Reach this relaxed retreat by a bumpy track up across gated fields crowded with chickens, cats… a peaceful, special place.

This is truly an exceptional place to stay. It is steeped in history and furnished in a fabulous and eclectic style that reflects the artistic and eccentric nature of the owner John and Annie. It was a pleasure to share their unique home and hospitality for a night, a really special experience.

A unique place to stay: fantastic house, eclectically furnished and lovely hosts. Opting for the evening meal results in a superbly cooked and presented dinner served with aplomb in a private mini-banqueting hall. Extremely impressive cooking and altogether a lovely place to stay, in a beautiful setting. Would love to return!

Nestled in the Welsh Hills, Hafod Y Garreg is a fabulous find, and we were completely immersed in its colourful history dated to 1402. Anne and John are wonderfully welcoming hosts, with a rich blend of humour, local recommendations, and great breakfasts to start off your day! Bedrooms are incredibly comfortable, and full of character, with quirky and sizeable bathrooms. A memorable stay and we hope to visit again!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hafod Y Garreg. Unfortunately we had only booked for one night and had not been able to take advantage of Annie's offer of an evening meal but you can be sure that we will be back. The welcome was wonderful and we had two largish dogs with us as well who also received a very warm welcome. Breakfast was wonderful, although I don't think that we did it justice. Next time I shall take a long early morning walk beforehand. We enjoyed John's sense of humour and find it difficult to believe that a previous "reviewer" took offence! We really hope to return.

Hafod Y Garreg is a magical little place. Tucked away in the valleys it's like stepping back in time. The lovely hosts made the stay even more special. The food also was completely gorgeous. The house was dripping with character, and there was something to see in every nook and cranny. Huge thanks to John and Annie for an overall delightful stay.

- We are in the middle of 3 towns - Hay on Wye, Brecon and Bullth Wells, all about a 15 minute drive.
- Brecon has been given 'dark sky status', one of 5 places in the world.
- Hay on Wye has the 'Hay Literary Festival' for 10 days in May/June.
- Builth Wells has the 'Royal Welsh Show' in July and the 'Smallhalders show' in May, also 2 massive antique fairs in May and September.
- Fantastic walking from here, no driving!
- At the bottom of the track to the house is the Wye Valley Walk, but also nearby are the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons.

We were lucky enough to stay at this stunning house, full of history and in the most romantic location. We had a wonderful break at Annie and John's house and it is a very special place: beautifully furnished (no surprises there as the owners have fabulous taste) and super comfortable (the bedrooms have everything you might need). The breakfast is delicious and cater for everyone. We were really looked after and Annie and John have plenty of good tips on what to see and do in the area. Perfect relaxing break. Thank you. We cannot wait to be back.
