The Experience

Such gracious architecture is rare in Wales: airy rooms and huge sash windows let the outdoors in. You can all be together in the huge kitchen, warmed by the Aga – chopping, chatting, creating – and eat inside at a long table, or outside on sunny days – French windows lead from the drawing room to the lawn and magical garden. Emily leaves you a hamper of local treats and basics for cooking in the cupboard but a private chef can be hired too.

There are big rooms with exquisite furniture and art but also cosier ones for escapees, lots of books to choose, puzzles and games and quiet spaces to sit and ponder the views. A formal parterre garden sits at the front, there’s an outside seating area up by the electric hot tub and no light pollution so the intrepid can head here when it’s dark.

Rucksacks, picnic stuff and cooler bags await so head to Lake Vyrnwy for walking, kayaking and bird watching – it’s an RSPB sanctuary.

Reviews

Emily and James have done an amazing job with Plas Uchaf. The house is beautiful but their attention to detail has made it sing. The location is excellent as are all the facilities in the house. For a relaxing getaway with a group of family and friends, Plas Uchaf has everything that you could wish for. The secluded hot tub in the garden is an additional bonus.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are good walks in the Tanat Valley and Llanrhaeadr waterfalls are 15 minutes up the road. Llangollen with its aqueduct and steam railway is 30 minutes for super local shops, the Three Eagles bar and restaurant and Plas Newydd House and gardens. You can go on a day hack, extreme bike, take a day trip to zip world (50 minutes) or have a guided walk in the Berwyn Mountains. Explore castles at Powis and Chirk.

Local points of interest from Emily & James Findlay-Cooper

  • The house is ideal for those wanting a quiet retreat, with no near neighbours, and lots of garden full of wildlife to relax in.
  • The Berwyn Mountains, Lake Vyrnwy and amazing waterfalls are all within 25 minutes drive of the house for excellent walking, kayaking and scenery.
  • National Trust owned Powis Castle is nearby, with its incredible state rooms and tiered gardens. The cafe is a good place for tea and cake too!
  • If you're into mountain biking, we're a stones throw away from some of the countries leading bike parks. Revolution Bike Park, Llandegdla Forest and the Dyfnant Forests to name a few.
  • In nearby Llangollen, the Corn Mill offers an excellent riverside lunch, where you can watch the braver of your party white water rafting along the river!
  • If you're staying for longer, why not take the 1.15hr drive over to the coast and explore the miles of sandy beaches and dunes at Aberdyfi and Barmouth.

Introducing

Emily & James Findlay-Cooper

Emily, who grew up in Cumbria, worked as an interior designer in Hampshire with her husband James. They were keen to move to a more rural setting with their children and have turned the house into something very special, using all their talents, so that when you're staying you'll feel very much at home and happy. They live nearby and can help with hiring a private chef or arrangements for weddings, events and gatherings.
