The
Experience

Age and modernity meld to stunning effect in this former Cistercian monastic grange, a trio of centuries-old buildings restored in exemplary fashion. The Great Hay Barn is the largest. Through the large open porch to a wonderfully light living area which expands over three levels to a soaring ceiling of huge oak beams. Glass doors allow sunlight to flood in and you to spill out to the huge lawn – add a marquee and you could have a fabulous wedding here. On wintry days, snuggle by the wood-burner or on the mezzanine gallery’s comfy sofas, among Welsh blankets, books and home cinema. The dining room seats 24 with ease, but you can also gather for meals around the breakfast bar or at the long wooden table in the top-of-the-range kitchen. A terrace opens out with spectacular Wye valley and Black Mountain views. When night falls, disperse to bedrooms over three floors, calm and uncluttered with beds in crisp cotton. A gentle walk across the river brings you to Hay-on-Wye’s bookshops and tea rooms; hiking, horse riding and mountain bike trails lead through the Brecon Beacons. A glorious setting for a very special place.
