The Experience

This 17th-century stone barn was originally a cider mill and is perched on the edge of steep woods about a mile above the river Wye. Together with Annie and John’s house, the oldest in Wales, it forms a cosy homestead, secluded and rural but not isolated – Hay-on-Wye and Brecon are both about a 20-minute drive.

Settle into the sitting room, which has good armchairs and sofa, TV and a wood-burner. You can cook for yourself in the Shaker style, flagged kitchen, where an elegant antique dining table has views looking down and across the valley, or join Annie and John’s B&B guests for a candlelit dinner. Retire to a light and airy bedroom upstairs.

There’s plenty of good walking in the area, wild swimming in the river or canoeing if the water level is high enough, and you can fish to your heart’s content. Look out for kites, buzzards and the occasional more unusual birds of prey. Return to a drink – or light up the barbecue – on your terrace at sunset, with nothing but the sound of birdsong and sheep.

Heaven - turn away from the roaring River Wye - track up through two gates and you arrive at the ‘pearly gates’ where St Peter (John) and his lovely Angel Annie welcome you to The Cider Mill. Log Fire, Aga, leather sofa, smeg fridge, open plan - roll top Bath - rustic, rural, restful - only those with an open, exploring mind will GET this charming dwelling. It is the perfect base from which to explore the local delights. Take favourite wine and gin - buy local Food. Location

The neighbourhood

From the house, there’s an easy walk along the River Wye or the more intrepid can do a circular walk over the hills or explore the nearby Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains. The nearest restaurant, Llangoed Hall, is three miles away and offers fine dining and afternoon teas; there are shops for basics a couple of miles away. The nearest town is Hay-on-Wye, a 15-minute drive, famous for its books and quirky vintage shops.

Introducing

Annie & John McKay

Annie and John were antique restorers in London and Annie had a vintage clothes shop until they moved to Wales on a whim. When they first saw Hafod Y Garreg they knew it was special but didn’t realise it was the oldest house in Wales by a generation. They love their guests to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy staying somewhere that is a bit different and interesting, both at their B&B and the Old Cider Mill.
