The
Experience
In a simple, colourful Alsatian village, this typical old farm is framed by shrubs, roses, manicured hedges and a pretty brick terrace. The welcome from the family, who have been here for generations, is as gracious as the setting. Bedrooms, in the main house or converted outbuilding, are splendid: a good size and comfortable, they have polished floorboards, oriental rugs and fine beds, one carved in Alsatian style. In the new, exquisitely decorated stable suites you’ll find timber balconies, wonderful fabrics and an even greater sense of luxury. Here, too, are the spanking new Aigle d’Or restaurant and the breakfast room, where Jean-Philippe’s delicious brioches and pastries are served. His father mans the bar, his mother and grandmother help in the kitchen, Brigitte meets and greets, Jean-Philippe is master chef and the food is outstanding. Chalked up on the board are escargots, foie gras, asparagus in season, choucroute, tarte flambée, apfelstrudel. Then retire to the wainscotted guest salon, warmed by a fine ceramic stove. A superb place run by a family that is professional, enthusiastic, endearing.

Fabulous! A warm welcome, comfortable rooms, wonderful food and in an area that totally surprised us. We cycled through vineyards, along the Rhine canal into Strasbourg and through fields of neat crops. I had no idea about the past history of tobacco growing. The Chateau Haut Koenigsbourg is well worth a visit. Alsace is evidently not an obvious choice for English visitors - we saw very few, but we would recommend it highly. Hotel a la Ferme is conveniently located for pretty well everything in the area and do consider using pedal power, the cycle routes are well signed and mostly flat.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Jean-Philippe & Brigitte Hellmann
- Conveniently located near to “Haut-Koenigsbourg”, a splendid castle from the middle ages. Close to the alsace wine road.
- Enjoy a bike tour along the wine trail or along the “canal du Rhône au Rhin”.
- Explore the monastery at Mont St Odile.
- 20 km from Strasbourg, capital of Europe and well known for its cathedral.
- Situated in the centre of Alsace, close to German border, on the way to Switzerland and Italy.
- Visit our family restaurant A l'Aigle d'Or for lunch or dinner. Family atmosphere, large wine choice. Goose liver, pike perch with risotto and white wine sauce, lamb shops, crème brûlée.

We really enjoyed La Ferme and the warm welcome of the Hellman’s and their family. Rooms are modern and beautifully planned; the overall quality of the buildings is superb, yet everything fits together in the old farm cluster. The restaurant was closed for the holidays, so Jean-Philllipe prepared wonderful meals under the stars in the courtyard. The breakfasts are exceptional. A perfect location when visiting Alsace.
