The Experience

Laze in the hammocks, bask by the pool, take supper by the poolhouse on a balmy summer’s night. With fairylights, music and an immaculate summer kitchen, the outdoor living is a hedonist’s delight.

Welcome to a long, large, flawlessly restored farmhouse tucked into a pastoral pocket of southwest France. Outside are large landscaped gardens, sweeping lawns, and trees loved by pine martins and red squirrels. Inside is vastly comfortable – and flexible: two kitchens, two sets of stairs, three living areas, and bedrooms and a second games room at the far end. Teenagers have their own realm.

Hike and bike; the walking is gorgeous and the Voie Verte is near. Or spread your wings to Château de Jumilhac and de Puyguilhem and beautiful, watery Brantôme (30km)… stock up at the Friday market, take a slow boat down the Dronne. Return to books, board games and characterful beams – and a shower room just for dogs.

Reviews

The perfect rural escape for a large group - the wonders of the Dordogne are not far, if you can get your family off the deep sofas, out of the kitchen or away from the glorious pool. Heavenly!

Location

The neighbourhood

The house lies in a dreamy landscape of fields, forests and lakes. Scenic walks start from the door; imagine ancient farms and storybook châteaux. There's wild swimming at the Grand Etang, Saint-Saud-Lacoussière (6km), and lunch at the Hostellerie St Jacques nearby: authentic auberges and small café-bars abound. As do weekly markets: each small town, from Mialet to St-Pardoux-la-Rivière, has one.

Local points of interest from Diana & Ross Appleyard

  • La Valade sits in glorious quiet countryside, but is only ten minutes from the nearest villages with bakeries, restaurants, bars and shops.
  • There are lovely scenic walks right from the door, into the depths of the countryside and through woods.
  • We are under half an hour from St Jean de Cole, regularly voted the prettiest village in France. Brantome, known as the 'Venice of the Perigourd' is 35 minutes away with two Michelin-starred restaurants and lovely shops.
  • For keen cyclists, we have easy access to the 'Voie Verte', a green lane perfect for cycling which takes you from Thiviers to St Pardoux-la-Riviere and beyond, passing beautiful villages and chateaux.
  • There is a market for every day of the week within easy drives, all in villages and towns with great restaurants and bars. Full details given in our guest information folder.
  • If you want to relax, La Valade is the perfect place. Most of the time - apart from the odd rumble of a passing tractor - the only sound is birdsong. With open fires, a wood-fired hot tub and heated outdoor kitchen, this is truly an all year destination.

Introducing

Diana & Ross Appleyard

Diana and Ross are fun, charming, and leave you a trio of their favourite local wines. They fell in love with La Valade during lockdown! He was a war correspondent with Sky News, she is a novelist, and both are mad about dogs, hence the fenced four-acre grounds. When they're away, which is often, guests are welcomed by an English-speaking housekeeper; and there's a lockbox for late arrivals.
