The
Experience

A short drive from the Lascaux caves is the tiny hamlet of Lafayette with its cluster of ancient stone buildings. Your rustic self-catering escape is utterly charming with views spilling over to valley, fields and farmland below. Apart from the odd chugging tractor and a solitary kite wheeling overhead, the peace is deafening, and our inspector couldn’t think of a better place to sip a cold G&T and watch the sun set. You step into a large open-plan kitchen/dining/living room so it’s super sociable; chef will be happy chopping and chatting in the pine kitchen and the sofa and chairs around the wood-burner positively encourage post-supper snoozing. Heave yourself upstairs (there are quite a lot of stairs) for deep sleeps in the simply furnished bedrooms – one has a bathroom, the other a shower room. Although you’ll need to zip out in the car for supplies (we recommend the market in Thenon but there are plenty of supermarkets nearby too) there are myriad walks from the door, and a 40-minute stroll takes you to the lovely little church in Chourgnac – very old and well worth a visit.

Reviews

We enjoyed a restful stay in a calm and peaceful environment, surrounded by pure nature; the house, with its very welcoming interiors, is very charming and comfortable. We enjoyed the sunny breakfasts on the terrace and also the spectacular sunsets. We made the most of our stay by exploring an area which is full of history and natural attractions. A marvellous spot!

We had a great time at Lafayette. The nice renovated farm house sits at the sunny and quite edge of a traditional 'Dordogne' hamlet next to a beautiful mansion. It was so nice to have dinner outside during sunset having a spectacular view in the nature. The area is very interesting and there are many things to explore. Historic cities, beautiful castles, caves, and so much more. But best was just to enjoy the peaceful place and relax from a busy city life. Definitely we will come again!

Lafayette is a beautiful place to stay and relax. The landscape is gorgeous and there are so many picturesque villages and historic sides around that you will never get bored. We stayed with our 5-month old baby there and loved to visit different farmer markets, spend a lot time with cooking and of course discovering all the castles, caves and cultural activities in Perigord. We will come again!

Beautiful and peaceful. It was truly the most relaxing 4 days and nights I can remember. To watch the stars come out over the woods and meadows around Lafaye with the only sound the chirp of crickets and occasional moo for company, magic! There is a lot to do and great local places to eat but to relax and switch off. Perfect.

a great house with charm, very quiet in the middle of nature! ideal for relaxing or working, as a couple or "en famille". a lot of change and interesting excursions in the area. beautiful sunsets! I can highly recommend this accommodation!

Lafayette is the perfect retreat. So peaceful. The sunsets are stunning. Once the sun has gone down stay outside in front of the fire and watch the stars. There's a beautiful swimming lake close by with a café and the local village has an excellent restaurant. We took bikes - if you like hills you'll love the cycling! The house is well equipped, warm and comfortable. The owners were a pleasure to deal with. Would very much recommend holidaying here :)

Alison, Halesworth

The charming house is located in a quiet area with no traffic and it offers enough room for a family (two noisy kids who love to move around and two adults who wish to relax). Outside the children can romp around and discover the surroundings and the adults can read in peace and contemplate the beautiful landscape. We've spent three times our summer holidays there and enjoyed it a lot. We will return for sure.

Local points of interest from Judith Affolter Davis

  • One thing we really love is the beautiful architecture of the Perigord, the typical stone buildings with their steep stone roofs, Sarlat, Hautefort or the little village of Ajat with its huge church.
  • As we love cooking we buy high quality and fresh food at the farmers markets in Thenon every Tuesday (10 minutes) or every Thursday in Excideuil (20 minutes).
  • If we go out for a meal we go here in Ste Orse: "Hotel de France“, we love that place because it is very authentic and very french. The best is going there for lunch through the weekdays, as they have a 4-6 course meal incl. wine for a good price.
  • Apart from Lascaux there are many historic sights. "La Roque Saint Christophe“ is quite impressive or the caves in Tourtroirac, the beautiful white cathedral in Perigueux.
  • Or just following the little stream Auvézère.
  • But what we love the absolutely most is the beautiful nature, the peace and quietness, the wind in the trees, the changing light....You can enjoy the most spectacular sunsets almost everyday.
