The Experience

Walk straight into a large open-plan living and dining room with beamed ceilings, original red stone walls, comfy sofa and chairs and a huge fireplace with a wood-burning stove. Plenty of books and DVDs will keep you happy if the weather isn’t good and the rustic kitchen has all you need for cooking up a storm, plus a welcome pack of local treats such as biscuits, a jar of pâté, lemonade and a bottle of wine.

Outside find a wooden veranda covered in wisteria – a perfect spot for an al fresco meal. The pool is a good size and there is a petanque pitch, badminton and volleyball court, all to yourselves. On balmy evenings relax in the garden with an aperitif in hand, across from the field dotted with peaceful cows.

It’s quiet here, but only 3kms to Hautefort for restaurants and a few shops. Gather what you need and spend your first days just easing down surrounded by much peace and quiet in this bucolic spot.

As a veteran traveler, I've stayed at all kinds of accommodations in France. Le Petite Verger is by far one of my favorites - it's exactly what I pictured in my mind for my French countryside stay. I appreciated all the small touches the owner proved upon my arrival. It definitely made me feel welcomed and set the tone for my entire stay. The house is spacious, very clean, and filled with all the essentials. The property is surrounded by a green pasture, has a pool (super clean), and is well manicured. It's just minutes from the town center which I thoroughly enjoyed exploring.

We had a great couple of weeks staying here in August. The house has a rustic charm but well equipped. There was plenty of inside space for the four of us to be all together, but lots of outdoor areas to roam and have a little bit of peace and quiet when we needed. The large covered porch was our favourite place to enjoy family meals. We made daily trips to Hautefort to visit the Boulangerie for bread and there is a nice big supermarket on the edge of town. Our children made the most of the large pool which was a nice luxury to have all to ourselves.

We had a wonderful time spending the holidays in this charming house. We were made to feel incredibly welcome, greeted by a basket or fruit and chocolates, a bottle of wine, and firewood in the stove. Everything was wonderfully clean and inviting, a perfect New Years in this beautifully cozy home surrounded by nature. We enjoyed walks around the country lanes, and a few visits into the small town of Hautefort, where there is a charming boulangerie. We were here once before in the Summer and spent many sunny days and long warm evenings by the pool. Whatever the season we will definitely return.

This house is the perfect getaway destination for those wishing to escape the city and unwind in luscious, peaceful countryside. All the cultural treasures and gourmet markets of the Dordogne are at your door. Heavenly!

The neighbourhood

The house is in the middle of a meadow with lots of established oak trees. It’s a short drive (or 45-minute walk) to the village of Hautefort, its medieval château and magnificent gardens, and Excideuil (20-minute drive) has a lively market on Thursday mornings with great quality produce. Uzerche is a 30-minute drive and has lovely cafés, churches, medieval cottages and cobbled streets - picture perfect.

Local points of interest from Patrice Bevans

  • Catch some culture: Tour the opulent rooms at Chateau Hautefort & the magnificent classical French gardens. The chateau is just 3km away. A great day out when paired with lunch or dinner at one of Hautefort's excellent restaurants.
  • There are numerous villages in the area with the classification of "Plus Beaux Villages" such as St. Amand de Coly, St Robert, Sarlat, Collonges la Rouge &Turrene just to name a few. Some as close as 20 mins away...none of them are farther than an hour.
  • If you fancy a bit of Prehistoric culture, Montingac-Lascaux, La Roc St Christophe, Les Eyzies & Les Grottes de Tourtoirac are all less than an hour from Le Petit Verger.
  • Spring-time brocantes can be found all over the region for those who love to hunt for bargains & the antique or two. If antiques are not your thing...consider visiting the numerous wine villages within easy reach like Bergerac, Cahors & St. Emilion. Sante!
  • The park-like grounds of Le Petit Verger are blooming with flowering fruit trees, tulips and narcissus to herald in the Spring from March to May. It is a spectacular time to visit and enjoy the lush green beauty and solitude of our rustic retreat.
  • In Autumn, treat yourself to a hot air balloon ride which lifts off from Chateau Hautefort- a unique and unforgettable way to appreciate the rolling landscapes and villages of this charming area of the Dordogne. We provide details in our guest book!

Patrice and Mike will meet and greet if they're around and about - aside from their two properties in France, they also spend time between America and the UK where their children are at school. You'll either let yourselves in with a key safe or with help from a neighbour. It's obvious Patrice has a passion for interiors and every detail in her places has her signature French style woven into it.
