The Experience

Your lovely hosts have converted their barn with a warm palette of ochres and yellows: it’s the kind of gîte they have often looked for in vain. Flooded with light, the living space feels big and airy and the décor is original, comfortable and unfussy. You’ll feel immediately at ease, ready to take a bottle of wine and a nibble from the welcome basket and relax on the terrace – or slide directly into the hot tub – with its long view of Dordogne countryside. On the other side, the courtyard garden makes an enchanting stonewalled suntrap; you’re surrounded by four acres of fenced grounds too – perfect if you wish to visit with your dog. Indoors, you have convivial sitting, eating and cooking spaces, all neat and pleasing with every kind of coffee-maker you could desire. The walk-in shower is generous, too. Up quite steep stairs (tall folk must mind their heads, but all will appreciate the views through the skylight of unpolluted starry night skies) find a mezzanine bedroom – not huge but with a king-size bed and a chest of drawers. Cycling, river sports, wine visits, fabulous markets and much historical beauty will entice you to explore.

My husband & I stayed here for a week and enjoyed every single minute. Brian & Hilary are great hosts, friendly, helpful but not intrusive and their dog Lily is adorable. The accommodation was spotless & comfortable and the starter pack was really appreciated. The shower room was big, the kitchen well-equipped and everything seemed to have been thought of. The house is off the beaten track, so if you want loud parties and the high life, look somewhere else. We got exactly what we wanted - a lovely place to stay, where we could laze around, pop out to Bergerac or visit nearby vineyards. Bliss.

We spent an idyllic two weeks in August (2019) at Les Chauprenades. Hilary and Brian (and Lily the dog) were there to greet us when we arrived – they are lovely and we knew at that moment that we had made the right holiday choice. The accommodation is tastefully and thoughtfully arranged over two floors, with an open-plan living/kitchen/dining area that works perfectly. All this and a four-acre garden! There is not enough word space for us to do justice to Hilary and Brian’s lovely hideaway, but then actions speak louder than words – we have already signed up for three weeks next year!

This is such a lovely gite, tucked away in a little hamlet with marvellous views over the countryside. Brian, Hilary and Lily (the dog) were the best of hosts, providing everything you could wish for in this beautifully converted barn and the welcome basket exceeded all expectations. There is so much to do and see in this area, or ... just laze in the shade of a tree and watch the sun go down with a glass of local wine and a good book. Perfect!

Anthea, Bourne

We spent a wonderful two weeks at this lovely gite. We were warmly welcomed by Hilary and Brian who were excellent hosts - unobtrusive, but there if needed. The accommodation was first class. Immaculate and very comfortable. The huge, grounds in which it sits are delightful with spectacular views, visited by deer, red squirrels and filled with bird song, including a nightingale. The surrounding area is beautiful with rolling hills and vineyards with easy access to all parts of the wonderful Dordogne region. Les Chauprenades is a very special place and we would recommend it without hesitation.

Andrea, Buxton

This is the kind of gite you really do appreciate. Everything you want is there including a generous welcome basket and bottles of wine. Brian and Hilary made us feel very welcome and were kind and generous hosts. We look forward to returning in the future.

Colin, Manchester

We visited Les Chauprenades for the third time this August. The welcome we received from Hilary and Brian, and Lily of course, was wonderful. We were made to feel like friends not clients. The gite was even better than we remembered from our two previous visits. Our welcome basket was tailored to fit (2 red wine as opposed to 1 white and 1 red). It's something like this that makes the difference. The weather was great and we were treated to a magnificent lightening storm one night. No fireworks display could equal it. We plan to visit again in 2019. That says it all.

We had a fantastic week at Les Chauprenades. The gite is beautifully appointed and well maintained. It is set in peaceful and beautiful countryside, and has an enclosed courtyard off the back door and a huge fenced paddock at the front of the property. Brian and Hilary were warm and generous hosts. Our two small dogs were also made very welcome. An excellent experience. Fully recommended.

John, London

We had a wonderful week in Les Chauprenades. The gite was spacious and well equipped. Hilary supplied a delicious meal and substantial welcome basket on first night. The enclosed grounds were a bonus for us as we could let our dog out without worrying. The surrounding countryside and views were lovely and the night sky amazing. Hilary and Brian were excellent hosts, very helpful but not intrusive. We will definitely return.

Christine, Liverpool

We highly recommend Les Chauprenades. The property is lovely with a really well-equipped kitchen, clean modern bathroom and comfy bed. We were with our 2 dogs and the grounds are completely safe with lots of room for running around. There are plenty of outside options for sitting, eating and relaxing, and trees for shade if you want it. The surrounding area is stunning with vineyards and rolling hills. Brian and Hilary are great hosts. They are friendly and helpful and we took advantage of Brian's wine tour one afternoon which we really enjoyed. We have booked again for 2019.

Carol, Arundel

Great hosts, wonderful location. A really special week thanks to great recommendations. We don’t normally repeat locations but probably will this time.

Andy &lorraine, Doncaster

In a quiet village and at the end of a quiet lane, you will receive a friendly welcome from hosts Brian and Hilary, and probably dog Lily too. The setting is stunning with a large garden to relax in. We were glad we took up the offer of the welcoming meal. Great food that made such a lovely start to our break. The drive to Bergerac is easy and the market, the shops and the good choice of restaurants make the journey more enjoyable. Equally, the gite is very well equipped for when you want to eat in. If possible visit Issigeac, for the Sunday market and an evening meal at La Bruceliere.

Paul & fiona, Stockport

This gite exceeded our expectations, the photos don't do it justice. Brian and Hilary provided a very generous welcome pack of basics and wine, and were very helpful throughout our stay. The best thing I can say is that we would return! I've given 9 out of 10, purely because I like to swim and there is no pool- although we did enjoy the hot tub.

Paul, Cirencester

We spent 2 weeks in Les Chauprenades in 2016 and again in 2017. This is the most peaceful place we have ever visited. Hilary and Brian are exceptional hosts who have thought of everything. We have taken their advice on places to visit and have not been disappointed. Lily is full of life and so so entertaining. The highlight of our visit this year was sitting in the courtyard garden with a full moon lighting up the countryside, listening to owls hooting. We love this place so much that we are planning to visit again in 2018.

Clare, Dublin

We had a fabulous week in Brian and Hilary's superbly equipped and comfortable gite; a real home from home. Best welcome basket that you are ever likely to receive and we would definitely recommend booking an evening meal from Hilary for the first night alongside Brian's well selected wine. Our holiday was made all the more time enjoyable by our great hosts who gave us lots of information on this beautiful area and were great company. Really genuine and friendly. Use the bikes whilst you are there, good quality and a good way to explore. You will also meet Lily who is a lovely, friendly dog.

Karen, Braunton, devon

Our second visit to this lovely, well-appointed gite in a beautiful peaceful location. Very welcoming hosts, always available but not intrusive. Lots to do locally or just relax with a book in one of the several sitting areas around the property. We had a very enjoyable fortnight holiday and would thoroughly recommend Les Chaupenrades.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Hilary & Brian McElroy

  • Explore the towns and villages of Cadouin, Lemeuil, Tremolat, Marqueyssac, Sarlat, St Emillion and the City of Bordeaux. The famous chateaux of Bridoire, Monbazillac, and Biron are all local and give a real insight into the area's colourful history.
  • Visit the Sunday market at Issigeac where you can mix with the locals. Pick up some delicacies for lunch on your terrace. A real flavour of rural French life.
  • Bergerac has charming medieval architecture, pretty streets, shops, bars & restaurants. The beautiful villages of Eymet, Issigeac, Villereal, & Monpazier, are within a short drive. In summer months the villages host musical events, fetes and brocantes.
  • We are not wine experts but do enjoy wine and have local knowledge. If you would like to visit the vineyards, but are not sure what to expect, are concerned about the language, or would just like a driver, we are happy to take you wine tasting.
  • Enjoy relaxing treatments, reflexology, hot stone therapy, massage, or have your hair styled at Les Chauprenades. We would be pleased to arrange an appointment for you with our popular, mobile, English speaking stylist/therapist. Please ask for details.
  • A welcome basket will be waiting for you containing local wine, produce, and items for your first morning's breakfast. Would you like dinner on arrival? We offer our guests a freshly prepared meal for the first evening.
