Mas Baronet

Campagnac lès Quercy, Dordogne

Immerse yourself in the peace, relish the views and the flower-filled garden: paradise. Inside: big, comfortable rooms and a super kitchen

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 6

Deep in unspoilt wild chestnut country, the strong old farmstead stands firm and golden on its ridge, the hills ebbing and flowing into two little valleys: a form of paradise. Bees and butterflies, boar and deer thrive under Robin’s conservationist husbandry, flowers, bushes, trees and veg flourish under Pat’s loving, expert hands. She is a whizz with plants – it’s her profession, after all; your private garden shimmers with colour and you may be allowed some fine fruits from the orchard and kitchen garden. A vibrant couple who have lived and learned a lot, they enjoy sharing their space and experience. Your ideal family holiday: a week in the lofty old barn with its comfortable bedrooms (big double with bathroom downstairs, two smaller doubles with shower up), large living room (books, DVDs, games), super kitchen. Add myriad marvels in spring, orchids in early summer, mushrooms and truffles in autumn, all the treasures of the Quercy year round: food, drink, walks, rivers, lovely little towns, devastating cave paintings – you can’t stay away.

This was our second visit to this lovely place but not our last-we enjoyed it just as much. It was like going to a familiar home, warmly welcomed by Pat and Robin, knowing where everything was and experiencing the beautiful garden and house again. We stayed at the house more this time as the weather was good and it was so pleasant to sit by the large pool. There is plenty to do with castles, rivers, interesting towns and shops to explore. We enjoyed especially the Sunday morning market at Cazals where we bought wine, bread, honey, foie gras and flowers. Wonderful relaxing and peaceful holiday.

Le Mas Baronet really is a Special Place, we are so glad to have found it! The house is spacious and comfortable and full of character; the garden beautiful, with loads of flowers, insects and other wildlife that we enjoyed spotting. The swimming pool a good size and in the loveliest of surroundings. The place is tucked away at the end of a lane among the woods and blissfully peaceful and remote seeming; but quick and easy to get to some of the prettiest and most interesting places to visit: Sarlat, Belves, Eyrignac, Daglan. Robin & Pat are very friendly, helpful and generous. A magical week.

We loved peaceful Mas Baronet, we have already booked for next year. The house has masses of character; smartly decorated with a big bedroom and bathroom downstairs and a spacious, comfortable sitting room. The beautiful garden is what makes Mas Baronet so special; private, lots of space to sit round the large pool and to eat outside with lovely views over the surrounding countryside. It was so fabulous we did not want to go out but there was lots to do in the Dordogne area including chateaux, river trips, bastide towns and caves. Pat and Robin who live nearby were warm and helpful hosts.

Excellent facilities; beautiful surroundings; very helpful owners.

There is no category for both thumbs up and a big grin but, if there were, Le Mas would qualify for it. Beautifully converted property, accessible without being in the least institutional, set in gorgeous gardens with charming and helpful hosts and the added bonus of an extensive book collection. Absolutely terrific.

We enjoyed a superb 10 days at Mas Baronet. Patricia and Robin's on site hospitality was excellent and their barn felt like our home. The location and facilities were as described and every bit as good as we hoped. We look forward to returning in the very near future. A beautiful hideaway.

Simon, London

A wonderful holiday home. It really feels like home. Books everywhere, we love it. The garden is beautiful, the pool with salt water is the best. Pat and Robin are very gracious hosts and made us feel more than welcome. We will be back!

Local points of interest from Patricia Shears & Robin Hare

  • Enjoy our homegrown organic vegetables in season or help yourself to cherries, mulberries, peaches and figs. If you would rather relax, we can cook delicious three course dinners for you by arrangement, Thai flavourings optional.
  • Roam freely in our 30 acres of garden, unspoiled pasture and woodland. Come for spectacular wildflowers and orchids in May/June, hoopoes feeding on your lawn if you're lucky and wonderful butterflies throughout the summer.
  • Don't bother with this year's blockbuster as our guests tell us we have an exceptionally well stocked library. Immerse yourself in a good book - or the large saline pool if you prefer - or even a vicious game of croquet.
  • Village "marches gourmands" are held most evenings throughout the area during high season. Choose your own local wine, foie gras or French colonial cuisine and let the kids enjoy the face-painting and disco.
  • Music lovers can choose from the Cahors Blues Festival, Bergerac's music festival and various local concerts in ancient churches and castles. Kids will love the medieval street fairs alive with troubadours and acrobats.
  • After canoeing on the river,hot-air ballooning, exploring caves and castles or ambling around fascinating medieval villages, dine at home under a star-studded sky . There's no light pollution here and only owls and nightjars to disturb your evening.
