The Experience

You stay in the very heart of the village of Sauternes, next door to the church in a smartly converted wine tasting building. The area is renowned for its sweet dessert wine – sit in the jasmine-covered courtyard sipping a cold glass and watch village life slip by.Pascale and Didier, your hosts, live a few hundred meters away in the vineyard. They settle you in, give you a set of keys, and each morning one of them pops over to prepare breakfast: pastries, crusty bread, cheese, fruit, ham and eggs. Eat in the dining room, or the courtyard on fine days. Walk to two vineyards – Chateau Guiraud (behind the house) and Chateau d’Yquem – or for lunch at one of the village restaurants (there are four). Hire bikes in the village; get in the car for trips to Bastide towns and chateau. Pascale and Didier can advise.

La Sauternaise is a beautiful place we were met by Pascale who was very friendly and gave us lots of information about the local area, places to visit and to eat. The room was large and lovely and the bed was very comfortable. We also had a steam room which after a long day driving was very appreciated!! In the morning Pascale cooked us breakfast and my husband who is a very fussy man really enjoyed his eggs and I enjoyed the fruit salad that she made for us. We will definitely return there again. I highly recommend la Sauternaise

Beautifully renovated building in pretty village of Sauternes. Pascale was exceptionally helpful booking wine tastings and advising on local eateries. Rooms are fresh and light with spacious modern bathrooms en-suite. Super-comfortable bed too. Breakfast was enjoyed in the quiet courtyard and was served with Pascale’s effortless style and grace - fruit, yoghurt, local boulangerie items plus a perfectly-boiled egg. So sorry to stay only one night! A minor drawback for some might be the ringing of next door’s church bells quite early in the morning.

La Sauternaise is a lovely B&B in a perfect location next to the church and close to excellent restaurants in this pretty French village. The house is tastefully decorated ,the beds extremely comfortable and every need is catered for including a wide selection of guide books, high end toiletries and refreshments. The hosts Pascal and Didier are delightful , both speak English and can’t do enough to help including making recommendations for wine tasting and sightseeing. There is free parking immediately outside the property. Thoroughly recommend.

We stayed at La Sauternaise for one night en route for Spain and had a lovely welcome from our host Didier. Our very stylish room was immaculate with a comfortable bed, top quality bedding and a great shower room. A view over the village caught the the late afternoon sun and we dined at a very good and lively restaurant, Auberge de Vignes just across the road. The breakfast was perfect with a choice of ham, eggs cheese and yoghurt as well as fresh bread and croissants. We will definately stay there again when in the area and thought it excellent value .

We had a beautiful room at La Sauternais with an outstanding bathroom. Nice touches and exceptional accessories enhanced the entire b&b. Pascale spoiled us in the morning with breakfast even including local specialties. We were very happy with our stay and look forward to returning for a longer stay.

ABSOLUTELY SUPERB!! Charming Old Europe on the outside; Modern and Impeccably-Appointed Europe on the inside, La Sauternaise is decorated with the tasteful eye of an artist, every detail effortlessly in place. Peacefully located right in the village and walking distance from wines of legend. The sweetness of the area's internationally-renown wines is only exceeded by the sweetness of Pascale and Didier's hospitality, whose English easily exceeded our French and were very helpful in every way, whether serving a lovely breakfast or making reservations at worthwhile restaurants.

The neighbourhood

In the village there are three good restaurants and a guinguette – an outdoor tavern where you can get cold platters anytime of the day. The nearest grocery shop is ten minutes away in Villandraut. Walk to both vineyards, famous for the areas sweet dessert wine. Château d'Yquem produce a Premier Cru Supérieur wine - the only Sauternes given this rating - invest in a bottle, it keeps for a century or more.

Pascale & Didier Galhaud

Didier works at the neighbouring vineyard - Chateau Guiraud and Pascale runs the B&B, dividing her time between guests and her young family. You’ll see them at check-in/out and for breakfast - but they're never far from you, they live a few hundred meters away hidden inside the vineyard.
