The Experience

An airy, open plan house with polished concrete floors, glass dividers, clever lighting. A sleek galley kitchen overlooks the garden, where there are shady oaks to relax under and a converted chicken house for the children to play in.

Bedrooms are bright and minimal – there’s a lovely children’s room with four bunks; a mezzanine floor works perfectly as a kid’s play area, and there are books and games for when the weather turns.

Spend evenings under clear night skies, sizzle meats on the plancha in the outdoor kitchen, open your welcome bottle of local Floc. The Aquitaine Coast has infinite beaches, surging Atlantic waves and frothing surf. Armagnac country is all around you, and Labastide-d’Armagnac is surrounded by cellars and vines.

Reviews

Love the conversion from a traditional dark farmhouse to this light and airy upmarket minimalist home. Yet there are still beams, exposed stone walls, tables, coffee tables beautifully converted from the original barn doors and old floorboards. This is a really classy home. Even the original outbuildings have been renovated for a modern use - the old chicken house is a children's playhouse, and the outside kitchen is a gorgeous room for cooking on the huge plancha.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is among the immense pine forests that march towards the Atlantic coast, bisected by leisurely voie vertes, so bikes are a good plan. The house has few neighbours, mostly small working farms, and is tucked down a narrow lane – it feels deliciously private. You’re five minutes’ drive from Cazères-sur-l'Adour, a pretty village with a bakery and grocer, while Eugenie-les-Bains (15 minutes) has excellent bistros (there’s a list in the house) and a spa.

Local points of interest from Véronique Farbos

  • The house was formerly our grandfathers' farm. They raised cows and veals, ducks, chickens and rabbits. Our family is still running a farm nearby.
  • The house was fully restored in 2017 with modern comfort. At one stage during the rennovation works, only the historic wood structure was still standing.
  • Here you are in the very heart of Armagnac. You can also visit the vineyards of Tursan and Madiran. Other local food obviously includes foie gras, but also many duck specialties, as well as local pastries : tourtière and pastis.

Introducing

Véronique Farbos

This was once grand-mère’s house, and Véronique and Michael have restored it beautifully. They live in Paris with their two children and have careers in finance and property but come back to stay in the family home whenever they can. One set of parents lives across the fields and will welcome you warmly.
