The Experience

Traditional and contemporary styles have been happily blended in this blue-shuttered Maison de Maître and adjoining converted outbuildings. In July and August both Maison Pyron and Le Grenier are rented together to one group of 12 with exclusive use of the pool. From September to June Le Grenier and Le Four can be rented separately with shared use of the pool. Fine furniture and objets d’art are much in evidence (Derek restores antiques), set off by original tile and wooden floors, exposed beams and a good scattering of rugs. Kitchens are well quipped for rustling up meals; living spaces range from roomy to snug, including a couple of wood-burners in the main house; bedrooms are sunny and fresh. Find board games, hammocks, the solar-heated pool and a poolside barn with table tennis and darts. With five acres of grounds to explore, it’s a children’s paradise. Canoeing, canyoning and the charming La Rhune railway into the Pyrenees are all within reach, there are festivals galore in the summer, food and night markets to be savoured, and plenty of restaurants and shops to discover within five minutes’ drive.

We spent a wonderful 2 weeks with 3 families at Maison Pyron - plenty of room for 12 (adults and children), with so much to do at the maison (swimming, some serious eating and plenty of relaxing in the lovely grounds) and spoilt for choice outside (mountains, lakes, seaside, city / village trips in France and Spain). Comes highly recommended !

Katy, Brighton

Our party of 12 spent two excellent weeks at Maison Pyron. Bea and Derek, made us very welcome (the home-made jam surpassed all others) and gave great advice for sightseeing. The pool was a good size, depth and warmth for us all plus a lot of inflatables; plenty of comfortable loungers and inside there is strong enough WiFi for 6 children to 'plug-in' to 6 different devices at any one time! The house, gardens and pool are immaculately clean, the house has unique character, traditional décor, and an LP collection that will keep those of you of a certain age entertained for hours!

Aileen, Shoreham-by-Sea

What a treat to enjoy a week of utter relaxation at Maison Pyron. The charming farmhouse is set amongst a spacious and varied estate with lot's of "hideaway" spaces where you can read or sketch or simply savour the tranquility. Adjacent to the inviting pool, the covered games area is a lovely place to chill in the shade. Immaculately kept, the house itself is spacious, light, and characterfully furnished with antique pieces. From Sainte-Colombe we would recommend days out to the coast or the spectacular Pyrenees. Bea and Derek, couldn't have been more welcoming, another visit a certainty!

Jon, Aberystwyth

We had a such a relaxing and wonderful stay at Le Grenier. Bea & Derek were lovely hosts, instinctively knowing to appear otherwise we were left to enjoy the house and surroundings to ourselves. The accommodation had been beautifully faithfully restored and the gardens lovingly cared for. Our 3 year old loved the freedom of exploring the large garden and saying hello to the chickens. The pool was a great hit and we spent many a happy hour in it. There are some fantastic French restaurants near by and the countryside round about is really stunning, just a very lovely part of France.

Local points of interest from Bea White

  • Set in the Chalosse rolling hills this 19th century house offers the peace of the countryside with opportunities to spot deer, butterflies, herons, buzzards, woodpeckers, hoopoes, turtle doves and the migrating cranes from your door step.
  • Pyron is situated between the unspoilt towns of Saint Sever and Hagetmau on the Santiago de Compostella Route. Saint Sever is steeped in Romanesque culture with its Benedictine Abbey and Cloisters. Take a tour round this old town to discover more.
  • Visit the magnificent Pyrenees for hiking and walks, villages and train rides; the Atlantic Coast with stunning views, surfing and pretty ports and San Sebastian for unmatched pintxo (tapas) culture and restaurants: all 1 to 2 hour’s drive from Pyron.
  • Go kayaking locally on calm or adventurous routes or try canyoning in the Pyrenees. The C23 cycle route runs through our village and Hagetmau boasts sporting activities of golf, tennis and has an Olympic-sized pool. Plenty of great walks around lakes too.
  • Part of Gascony the area is proud of its heritage, cuisine, wine and Armagnac. Enjoy tasting local fayre as well as delicious veg and herbs from our new potager and a welcome pack with home-made jam; free range eggs from our own chickens and local wines.
  • Enjoy the local summer village fêtes, night markets, and activities for children, especially at the local animal parks and farms. Alternatively enjoy a candlelit tour of Château de Gaujacq or visit the archaeological site Maison de la Dame de Brassempouy.
