Duras, Lot-et-Garonne

Sunflowers, sky and glorious views – enjoy them from the pretty terrace or a lounger by the pool. A super place for a family to stay

At the end of a track lined with cherry trees, surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers, is a blue-shuttered house with far-reaching views; take a book to the garden and dream. There’s no traffic to disturb the peace, just the odd splash from the pool which you are most welcome to share. Jeanette and Richard have taken the leap, to leave the UK for the Lot-et-Garonne and open up a B&B. Bedrooms are spotless and sweet; bathrooms are new; dinner includes local wines. Little Duras (2km) has restaurants, a bar, a market and a chateau on top of the hill – and if you’re feeling lively you can kayak down the river Dordogne.

An absolute Idyll! Clean, well cared for with welcoming hosts. Nothing was too much trouble for them. A fabulous B & B in a beautiful area.

A gem. We stayed one night only, B&B with an evening meal. Situated 3 km west of Duras, Labarthe has wonderful long views to Duras and beyond. The accommodation was very comfortable and is beautifully appointed. The evening meal was delicious and the continental breakfast first-class. Jeannette and Richard were most attentive and welcoming hosts. We wished we could have stayed longer.

Utterly superb with delightful hosts, superb food, pools and first class bedrooms. If all your members are as good as this we will be avid followers for our future trips.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Richard & Jeanette Hyde

  • Walking and Cycling is very popular in France, the Regional tourist office website has a section dedicated to routes with downloadable maps. For serious cyclists there are local Bike Hire companies.
  • Night Markets are popular in this area in the summer months, a different venue for each day of the week. Food, drink and entertainment is available from 7pm to midnight, catering for all ages. All in all a great family evening.
  • Golf, courses for the serious or not so serious are close by. Chateau de Vigiers is an award winning 27 hole golf course just 20 minutes from Duras.
  • Chocolate Lovers will adore Maison Guinguet. Situated in the foothills of Duras you are invited to sample their delicious chocolates and prunes, delicious. They also have many non chocolate gifts, something for everyone.
  • Restaurants - Duras has three excellent restaurants and three Cafe's that serve lighter dishes. The plat de jour at lunchtime is excellent value.
  • Wine - Of course! There are many vineyards that offer wine tastings within minutes of Labarthe. In the summer months there are many organised events.
