The Experience
On the hem of a hamlet in the rural heartland of the Auvergne is a traditional farmhouse turned carbon-neutral eco home. Bring a gang of pals or all the family for an activity packed getaway: there are peaks to climb (and ski), lakes to swim and rustic cuisine to enjoy. This part of the Massif Central feels like a well-kept secret.
The house is bright and unpretentious; kids and adults will feel equally at home here. Downstairs is a cosy bolthole for two (but there’s an extra sofabed) and upstairs sleeps 10 (the master double has a freestanding tub in the room). The bigger kitchen is sleek, smart and really well kitted out. Get stuck into board games or table football, splash in the outdoor pool.
In summer the walks are glorious and there are mountain bikes to borrow. The slopes are easy-going on this volcanic plateau, perfect for children or beginners. You’ll find some cheese and wine waiting at the house, and you can barbecue on the terrace – the local beef is superb.

Location
The neighbourhood
The slopes, carved out by extinct volcanoes, are great for beginners or those who don't want to jostle with the hordes. In the summer every walk will bring you to pastures full of gentle red-brown Salers cattle that make the famous cheese. St Flour (20 mins) has a great foodie market. Visit Eiffel's Viaduc de Garabit (30 mins), follow the prehistoric Route des Megalithes, kayak the Truyère river.

Introducing
Valérie Pallé
Owners Valerie and Pierre live in Monpellier but know the Cantal area intimately and spend as much time here as they can. Valerie works in the luxury hotel industry, and you can tell, she's thought of every small detail that you might need for a great holiday. Pierre runs a publishing company specialising in books about the region. Housekeeper Celine will meet guests, or you'll let yourself in.
This wonderful place appeals hugely! I fell in love with the Cantal for its landscapes but also for the brilliant ski areas that offer really reasonably-priced and crowd-free skiing. I would love to get a group of friends and family together to spend a fun, sporty holiday together, exploring the countryside, and enjoying the comforts of this beautifully-renovated Eco lodge.
