A sunken bath, splendid arched doors, masses of space; flowers blaze in a wild little garden. Auvergne's glorious nature and villages beckon

Clinging to a hillside where woods and birds abound and water gushes in the valley below, La Roche stands at the end of the lane in glorious isolation and a blaze of flowers. The delightful, knowledgeable and thoroughly welcoming English owners live in the old farmhouse, you are in the remarkably converted barn at the front end of the building. Through the high arched doors a splendid split-level living space ascends to old oak beams. The main floor, lit by that glazed barn door and high windows onto your private patch of wild garden, is where you will cook and eat and gather in unexpectedly urbane 1980s bucket chairs by the wood-burner; there's underfloor heating, too. The mezzanine has two futons, a table and chairs for board games and super photographs of life in old Auvergne. Beyond, two snug bedrooms share a clever little grey-green bathroom where the bath is countersunk so that you shan't bang your head when showering. The other shower and the laundry are in the basement. Nature is queen here and summons you forth whatever the weather; or explore those unspoilt villages and towns.

Local points of interest from
Catherine & Michael Slater:

  • You'll be deep in the unspoilt Auvergne, half an hour away from the Cantal mountains and the Aubrac plateau, glorious with flowers in spring and early summer. It's a joy for bird-lovers, especially during the autumn migrations to north Africa.
  • The region is steeped in history, with its mediaeval churches and villages standing out in massive basalt against the fertile green landscape. You'll find old stone paths dating from Roman times, later used by successions of pilgrims and merchants.
  • If you enjoy haute cuisine it's only 30 minutes to the 2-star Michelin Restaurant Serge Vieira in Chaudes-Aigues, or an hour to the 3-star Michelin Michel Bras in Laguiole. But make sure you book early as they fill up months in advance in high season!
  • Walkers enjoy our richly varied scenery: high upland pastures ringing with cow-bells; wooded valleys and gorges with tumbling streams giving respite from the sun. There are quiet footpaths meandering from village to village, and the GRs for longer hikes.
  • You can go horse-riding (10 minutes), hire boats or fish on the lake (20 minutes), then enjoy the spa in Chaudes-Aigues with the hottest natural springs in Europe (82 C). Children love the big swimming pool in St Flour with its outdoor water-slides.
  • If we are there to welcome you in February you can try cross-country skiing or snow-shoes (30 minutes away), or visit the family-friendly, inexpensive resort at Le Lioran (1 hour) for downhill skiing, snow-boarding and dog-sleighs.
