The Experience

Michèle – friendly, approachable – has created an oasis on the outskirts of town with peaceful bedrooms and a lovely heated pool. In the bright, tiled lounge there’s a baby grand piano and a travelling library, and next door, space for help-yourself organic breakfasts of local honey and homemade pastries. Your host can make cheese and charcuterie plates for late arrivals.

Choose from east-facing bedrooms with views over the town, or Tilleul-Menthe which looks over the back garden; bathrooms are stocked with locally made, Haute-Loire brand, organic toiletries.

Explore Plus Beaux Villages Lavaudieu and Blesle, bring bikes to test VTT trails (there’s a drying room for kit), or paintbrushes to get involved in the Watercolour Biennial – picnics can be provided with notice, and Michèle can cook evening suppers on Mondays when the town’s restaurants are closed.

Accommodation

Reviews

Had a very short stay at the Clos des Campanules, on our way back to Caen. We had the Clair Matin room which had fantastic views. Great restaurant recommendation we could walk to (best steak we’d had in France!). Breakfast was perfect and we loved the home made Madeleines (pocketed 2 for the journey!). Michele was so friendly and helpful and we wished we could have stayed longer.

Sarah, London

Splended accommodation in a quiet environment of the lovely small town of Brioude. Mrs Michèle, the lady of the house, received us very friendly. The rooms were very nice, clean and well furnished. The house has a lovely garden including a swimmingpool. The lovely garden-breakfast was carefully taken care of by Mrs Michèle. Brioude is a nice small old town, with a nice market on Saturday, a lovely museum and nice restaurants. Have a nice stay!

Mechteld, Maastricht

We had a warm welcome from Michèle at Clos des Campanules. There are nearby restaurants in the town for supper and the breakfast with homemade produce was delicious. The pool was much appreciated by our two children and the rooms are very comfortable.

What a wonderful home Michèle has! We (we are a family of four) had a very happy few days exploring this beautiful area. Michèle was so helpful and gave us the most delicious breakfasts every morning. The house is so beautifully decorated, fantastic attention to detail and so comfortable. We felt so well looked after too. It was lovely to spend the day exploring and then come back and have a lovely swim, perfect! So pleased we found Clos des Campanules!

Laura, Hampshire

What a delightful warm welcome we received from Michele. The room was beautiful and comfortable with a stunning views of the valley and hills. Michèle was extremely helpful in sorting out our evening restaurant which was only a short walk from her splendid family home. Nothing was too much trouble. Lovely breakfast with homemade fruit crumble in addition to The yummy plentiful buffet breakfast. What a lovely part of France this is. Not far from A75 so ideal for our journey home from the south of France. It was all super. Thanks so much.

Carol, Hereford

Michèle offers a warm welcome to her spacious, comfortable, family home, bringing attention to detail in everything from homemade baking at breakfast to locally-made organic toiletries. She loves to show off the best of the area, and really cares that her guests make the most of their stay. Browse maps and guides, borrow or swap books, and play a grand piano in this fabulous home-from-home!

Location

The neighbourhood

The arrival is unassuming: a minor road leads uphill through suburbia to the house in a cul-de-sac set within mature gardens shaded by linden trees. There are houses either side, but it feels secluded, with views as far as the Brivadois plains and the mountains. Small market town Brioude has a train station (Michèle can collect you), a good choice of restaurants and a Saturday market. It’s hosted stages of the Tour de France several times, including in 2019. Cultural too with the Romanesque basilica, a contemporary art centre (exhibitions: Chagall 2018 and Miró 2019) and the Watercolour Biennial.

Local points of interest from Michèle Lieurade

  • In 2017, the Korean monk, Kim en Joong created the magnificent stained-glass windows of Brionde’s the Romanesque basilica of Brioude. Alongside the Taj Mahal and the Tate Gallery in the Michelin Green Guide, it is "Worth the detour". Spread the word!
  • The Hôtel du Doyenné in Brioude, with its historic monument-listed ceiling, was renovated in 2018. It is now a centre of contemporary art that hosts exceptional exhibitions. June 26th-October 11th: Nicolas de Staël. A must see!
  • Brioude is "porte du Haut-Allier", a preserved natural area, with picturesque villages along the river Allier. Hiking, water sports, mountain biking or visit what art and history this country has to offer. There is so much to discover!
  • Only a few kilometres from the Clos des Campanules, discover 2 of the most beautiful villages of France in a green setting: Blesle with its many medieval remains and Lavaudieu with its abbey, Romanesque cloister and winegrowers’ houses.
  • The Chaîne des Puys, west of Clermont-Ferrand, was declared World Heritage Site in 2018. A rare alignment of 80 volcanoes, not to be missed. Admire it from the top of Puy-de-Puy-Dome where the panorama is exceptional.

Introducing

Michèle Lieurade

After organising events in Paris, Michèle swapped corporate life for running the family home as a B&B. She has a deep love for the region and can recommend interesting things to do or help you practice your French. She lives in a private area of the ground floor and will give you the code to the door to come and go as you please.
