On the site of a 14th-century hamlet, this handsome Breton property has two very well-renovated houses to let. They work well together for a group and share three acres of garden and woodland on the Nantes-Brest canal. Head off on the bikes for a peaceful pedal along the towpath (spot an otter!) – to lunch, perhaps Michelin-starred, in Mur-de-Bretagne (5km). You’ll get a friendly welcome from Kevin and Louise, who have set out to preserve original features (arched stone fireplaces, ceiling beams) while adding practical and well-equipped kitchens, efficient wood-burners and shower rooms. Go for a dip in the new heated pool. The style is unpretentious, the comfortable furniture is mostly modern. The grandest room – the master bedroom in ‘Longère’ – has a lovely big south-facing window, a huge oak bed, a big en suite shower. The bedrooms in ‘Cottage’ are spacious, cosy and carpeted. It’s great to have a separate laundry room, a choice of bedding and a generous arrival hamper. You’re an hour from the Gulf of Morbihan for sailing and stunning coastlines.
