Fields, woods, sea and the coastal path are just yards away – all feels lovely and rural yet Vannes is a short drive. Owners Éric and Sophie built the neat modern building in the 1990s, but it’s so well designed and decorated it feels like it’s been in the family for ages. Warm colours, oriental rugs and fine family pieces sit easily in the smallish salon and dining room; these open onto terrace, garden and pool (heated and open all year round and sheltered by a high wall) – great places to relax or play with the children on the big lawn. Éric (who speaks excellent English) attentively prepares itineraries for guests: boating, swimming in the sea or inland exploration. His father’s water colours lend personality to all the rooms and the unusual candlesticks in the hall and ancestral portraits, including a large Velazquez–style child in a great gilt frame, are most appealing. Snug bedrooms, with a good mix of old and modern, are attractive in shades of red, green and salmon; nearly all have brand new bathrooms with spacious showers. Come by electric car and charge up at this easy, friendly place to stay.
