The Experience

From this peaceful spot, meander through gentle countryside to reach wine tastings, visit the hill town of Vézelay with its Benedictine abbey or to canoe from Saint-Père. Return to a homely place, where guests have a separate entrance and a living room, as well as access to a handy fridge and microwave. ‘Gamay’ on the ground floor has its own little courtyard terrace for quiet relaxation, and there’s a big garden with fruit and vegetable patches and spaces for outdoor dining. Lovely Irish hosts Anne and Stuart offer boulangerie goodies, homemade jam, eggs and yogurts from the nearby farm for breakfast, and serve up good value dinners too.

This was our second visit to this beautiful home. The warm welcome, hospitality and generosity provided by Stuart and Anne ensured our stay would provide more wonderful memories of our time in this very beautiful area. Their delicious home cooking never fails to impress. The beautiful and spotlessly clean accommodation a rare find. Our sincere thanks for making our stay so enjoyable.

We spent a night in the pretty “Gamay” room of this beautiful property in the heart of the village of Asnan. Situated on the edge of the Morvan Natural Park, the landscapes are stunning, hilly and wooded. The charm of the house equals the warm welcome of its hosts, Anne and Stuart. Everything is perfect, dinner and breakfast. We recommend it.

If there had been a rainbow to see, this would have been the treasure at the end of it. Anne and Stuart welcomed us into their home as if we were old friends. The moment we arrived, we immediately felt relaxed. Their home is beautiful, full of lovely touches to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. We had an evening meal prepared for us along with three other guests which was, we feel, a big ask in itself - it was delicious, indeed the best meal we have had throughout our entire trip to France and Italy. We are so looking forward to our stay on our return trip home in a few days' time.

We received a very warm welcome from Anne and Stuart and our room was light and comfortable. We had to change our date last minute and they were very helpful in recommending a wonderful restaurant in Clamecy, as they couldn’t cook for us that evening. If the delicious breakfast was anything to go by, it was a shame to have missed out on the evening meal... so we’ll have to make a return visit! Looking forward to it...

‘Le Jardin d’Amis’ is just that - a very friendly and relaxing base from which to visit a less frequented, peaceful part of Burgundy which nevertheless has much to offer the visitor. Anne and Stuart make every effort to ensure that guests feel welcome and comfortable in their beautiful home and garden. Meals are delicious and thoughtfully prepared using local ingredients. Our room was spacious and well-equipped with a comfortable bed ensuring several good nights’ sleep!

We have just come back from our third visit to Jardin d'Amis. The accommodation is classical French elegance at its best and the delicious food is home made and locally sourced wherever possible. Stuart and Anne never fail to give us a wonderfully warm welcome and I would recommend anyone to take a detour to visit this little gem.

What a wonderful break from reality we had at Jardin d'Amis! In a quintessential French village - the bed & breakfast is nestled in a small courtyard - only a few metres from the village square. We spent our weekend visiting the many wonders the region has to offer: from canoeing at Lac des Settons to wine-tasting galore in the many local vineyards. The evenings were spent relaxing in the garden - sampling the delicious 'table-d'hotes' meals that Anne & Stuart had to offer. The breakfasts were to die for with home-made jams & fresh croissants! It was very hard to tear ourselves away indeed!

We have been staying with Anne and her husband in their wonderful house for a number of years and will be heading there again later this year. They are very good at making their visitors feel welcome and at home - nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are very well appointed and comfortable. Local produce is used whenever possible for meals and often comes freshly picked from their own garden! Delightful and highly recommended.

Rebecca, Abergavenny

We visited Jardin d'Amis in May 2013 and found Anne and Stuart to be the perfect hosts. Their property is a lovely and very comfortable farmhouse and we especially enjoyed the wonderful meals. There is plenty to do and see in the area and Anne and Stuart helped us with their advice and directions.

Local points of interest from Anne Irwin

  • Wine Tasting-Drinking-Buying - Chablis, Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé - need we say more ..... if we must.... Pommard, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges... it is Burgundy after all!
  • Guédelon, where they are building a castle over 25 years, using the tools and techniques of the Middle Ages as seen in the BBC2 series ‘Secrets of the Castle’.
  • Vézelay and its Basilica (UNESCO site), from where Richard the Lionheart launched the Third Crusade in 1190 and still a starting point for the Santiago de Compostella route.
  • The Morvan Natural Park (larger than the Peak District) is on your doorstep. Wild swimming & kayaking in its lakes and rivers, mountain biking, forest walks and wildlife, cycling along the canal - everything for the outdoor enthusiast.
  • Visit medieval Auxerre, Nevers on the river Loire and Clamecy on the Nivernais Canal. Small is beautiful too … lots of little treasures in the villages, vide-greniers and markets - come and see for yourself.
  • We are well known for delicious home cooked meals using fresh ingredients from our garden and local producers, but if you are looking for something more sophisticated we are happy to recommend a number of excellent local restaurants.
